What the brewers say

“Heavy notes of chocolate and vanilla with delicate blueberry and orange-peel acidity.”

What our panel thought

“Rich, inviting coffee aroma. Flavor leans into bright raspberry and blueberry flavors while the coffee aspect is much more subdued. Prickly carbonation, hop spiciness, and a touch of roast walnut lend a lively aspect to the mouthfeel.”

What our editors thought

“Strong classic coffee in the aroma with a slightly nutty tone that carries through into the flavor. Medium sweetness mellows the more astringent and bitter notes.”

Avery Brewing Company Vanilla Bean Stout

**Aroma:** “Aroma is overall muted, but moderate caramel, mild coffee, light chocolate, moderate toast, moderate plum and cherry, light vanilla. Reminds me of a Belgium Strong or perhaps an Eisbock. As it warms, more spiciness comes out.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness, roast, plum, cherry, coconut, earthy. Touch of caramel and vanilla, big dark chocolate and mouthfeel. Big sweet fruity notes up front, almost sangria-like. Light chocolate and coffee notes in the background mixed with a moderate alcohol warming. A nicely balanced beer that reveals more as you sip.” **Overall:** “Dark chocolate, vanilla, and hints of roast coffee dominate the front of this beer, and coffee, dark cherry, and dark chocolate linger at the end. Pleasant and easy drinking. Take a sip, and you’re happy to take the next sip.”

Atrium Brewing Barrel Aged Honest Thief (2024)

“Aroma features coffee strongly, with cinnamon and chocolate in the background. The flavor is more complex, with cinnamon and chocolate balancing the coffee, vanilla in a supporting role. Undertones of sweet pipe tobacco. Alcohol is evident but not harsh. Wonderfully balanced.”

Atrium Brewing Denny-Lou Blend 1

“With so many barrels to choose from, which to notice? The rye jumps up first, thrusting a spicy alcoholic warmth in the nose. The vanilla notes of the bourbon slide in along the edges, smoothly blending with the spiciness and a soft leathery chocolate flavor. The brandy barrel maybe comes out in the flavor, but honestly, they swirl together in a warming mélange that fits nicely with the sweet roast of the imperial stout. The alcohol cuts through the sweetness, making this an awesome winter warmer. And the complexity grows as it warms and invites the next drink.”
