What the brewers say

“Our bourbon barrel–aged Russian imperial stout.”

What our panel thought

“Subdued aroma highlights fruity esters, oak, spirits with a hint of chocolate, raisin, toast. Nice balance between the barrel and the beer. Flavor is sharply boozy, with the roast elements subsumed in the boozy concoction. Clean and focused on the booze. Enjoyable, but lacks complexity. Oddly sweet. Simple.”

What our editors thought

“Wet woody notes in the nose with thinner bourbon. Warmer bourbon and roast in the sip, rounded but a bit thin.”

Two Roads Brewing Co Igor's Dream

“Aroma is a lovely blend of rye and whiskey. The flavor is carried by chocolate, coffee, toast with low cherry, fig esters. Hops are higher in this one, with an odd dill/herbal note.”

Cape May Brewing Bourbon Barrel-Aged Concrete Ship

Deep chocolate rounds out with a strong tannic note. Mouthfeel is a bit chewy but not enough to fully satu-rate your mouth. Starts slightly sweet but ends with a dry note. Hops bitterness lingers a little too long.

Reuben's Brews Tmavétor

“Sherry, vanilla, and toasty malt, laced with toffee, dates, and raisin. Slight burnt sugar note running through. Despite all the signifiers of sweetness, it finishes dry. A fair amount of wood in both the nose and flavor.”
