pFriem Family Brewers Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout

What the brewers say

Aged Oola Distiller’s bourbon barrels for a year, resulting in huge roasted malt, chocolate mousse, coconut, and ripe cherry flavors.

What our panel thought

Licorice, molasses, sweet tobacco, and chocolate-cake aromatics. Roasted dark cacao, wet wood, smoke on the tongue that lingers for a while. A divisive offering: some will love it, some will hate it.

What our editors thought

Understated but rich cocoa on the nose feels sophisticated and confident. The sip offers a subtly barreled, semi-dry, dark cacao chocolate flavor that’s on the spare and spartan side—a touch thin and sharp.

Creature Comforts Brewing Concurrence No. 5

Sweet, rich, cream-and-sugar nose—coffee, vanilla, caramel ice cream, coconut, low oak. Smooth, full body like sweet Turkish coffee. Nice finishing bitterness to balance—sweet, not sticky.

pFriem Family Brewers Rum Barrel Aged Porter

“Light alcohol, smoke, and pepper-like spice waft out of a roast-malt-forward aroma. Sweet notes of caramel, chocolate, and vanilla transition to a roasty bitterness, with hints of pepper on the finish.”

PFriem Family Brewers Oud Bruin Kriek

Delicate raspberry-citrus aroma, with barrel funk and crushed lemons in an old wooden pail. Flavor brings dark fruit, tart cherry, red currant, tomato—nicely balancing malty sweetness and acidity. Balsamic edge tickles the tonsils. Delicate, smooth finish.
