What the brewers say

“From the subtle sweetness of orange peel and plum to the peppery bite of fresh ground coriander, the blend of spices creates just the right refreshing kick to signal that spring is on its way.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet aroma with perfumey herbal notes and slight spices. Subtle citrus, but the herbal spice is far more prominent. Bright wheat with bits of tangerine and black pepper. Floral with earthy almost coffee-like aromas.”

Flavor: “Floral and herbal spice are balanced by the sweetness of wheat and citrus orange. Finish is not as crisp as one expects from a wit. Fruity acidity with some honey malt character backbone. Some spicy, peppery notes. No coriander and no citrus, but nice acidity.”

Overall: “A refreshing and complex take on a wit. Spices are showcased, but the creaminess of unfiltered wheat comes through nicely. No obvious flaws, but grain sweetness seems out of balance and could use more coriander and citrus. The balance improves as you drink it.”

Samuel Adams / Boston Beer Company Double Agent IPL

**Aroma:** Big citrus and pine American hop aroma. Malt is in the background, caramelly and toasty. Some toffee and ethanol. **Flavor:** Big hop flavor follows the aroma: grapefruit, pine, and cedar. Bitterness is assertive but enjoyable. It coats the tongue well past the aftertaste. Malt sweetness rounds out the flavor, but since it wasn’t invited to this party, it leaves early. **Overall:** An aggressively hoppy beer with the softening of esters. The hops may seem excessive because of the clean fermentation. Lots of hop heads will enjoy this showcase of Pacific Northwestern hop varieties.

Brewery Ommegang Witte

**Aroma:** “Very floral aroma with slight caramel notes in front of the wheat. Nice floral coriander notes and slight citrus. Hints of herbs. Almost a banana-like ester.” **Flavor:** “Nice sweetness of honey and citrus orange fruitiness with notes of ly- chee. Slight wheat flavor and light earthy hop character. Earthy pepper notes are present. Sweet, almost banana profile. Nice balance of acidity and carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. No flaws, but almost more like a hefeweizen than a wit.” **Overall:** “Excellent. Great balance. Sweet and refreshing wit with an acidic lactic taste gives a good finish. Very nice profile of yeast characteristics. Very fresh coriander.”

Brouwerij van Hoegaarden Hoegaarden Wit Blanche

**Aroma:** “Nice balance of spice and herbal notes with sweet citrus and wheat character. Floral notes of jasmine and rose petals. Hints of herbal notes and spicy black pepper. Slightly medicinal phenolic character. Big coriander aroma, some spice, but not much else.” **Flavor:** “Complex spice and herbal notes. Coriander and pepper balance with orange peel and citrus. Creaminess and light but earthy sweetness come through from the wheat. A bit of a plastic phenolic aftertaste. Light citrus. Very crisp yet creamy mouthfeel. Dry finish.” **Overall:** “A good example of a wit, with nice acidity and sweetness. Easy to drink and refreshing. Well balanced, though the phenols border on unpleasant.”
