pFriem Family Brewers Czech Dark Lager

What the brewers say

“Our Czech Dark Lager honors the popular Czech ‘dark beer’ with aromas of toffee and dates and notes of anise and caramel.”

What our panel thought

“Light brown in color, bright; solid, lasting head. Toasted bread, chocolate, hints of coffee, caramel, and sulfur coupled with strong, floral, Noble-hop aroma. Rich yet restrained malt flavor: toast, crust, light chocolate. Bitterness almost perfectly balanced to keep the malt in check. Super-clean. Refreshing finish. Lightly sweet malt begs for another taste. Elegant, creamy carbonation brings all the flavors together in wonderful synergy. Herbal hop flavor might be a touch strong for style, but it plays so well.”

What our editors thought

“Toffee with some pumpernickel spice on the nose, with singed bread crust and an almost floral, lavender note. Flavor is bright, big, caramel-forward without going sweet, clean, warming, and satisfying while still finishing with a crisp kick. Beautiful.”

The Austin Beer Garden Brewing Co Industry Pils

Light sulfur note complements the classic Noble hops—lightly toasted white bread in the background—creating a familiar and enjoyable nose. Light, crisp, clean body. Hop flavor is slightly too conservative, but the bitterness provides a foundation to hold through the finish. Crazy drinkable. Before you know it, you're ordering a second, or perhaps third...

Phase Three Brewing P3 Dark Czech-Style Lager

“The roast and chocolate malt nose is almost porter-like, but the flavor rekindles memories of tmavé in Prague. A hint of sulfur in the aroma as it warms. Brown, clear, lovely head that retains well. Pronounced, but soft, toast, milk chocolate, and bread crust. Dark malt melds with plum and cocoa notes to bring pleasant depth, but the finish is clean and smooth. The floral and spicy hop character pushes it farther away from porter, all while staying in perfect harmony. Light fig and cherry from malt esters. Distinct and well-presented flavors, thoughtfully defined with impressive balance. Finishes dry as the toast and chocolate linger. Inviting aroma with flavors that keep you at the table.”

Bierstadt Lagerhaus Oktoberfest (2023)

“Brilliant copper color, good foam. Pleasant, mellow dark-bread notes, like pumpernickel drizzled with light honey, with some welcome if subtle herbal hops. Integrated flavor—light sweetness fully melds with a smooth, restrained bitterness, drying out beautifully, getting some lift from ample carbonation. Everything a good Oktoberfest should be.”
