Odell Brewing Drumroll APA

What the brewers say

“A bold, juicy, citrus-inspired, and tropically hops-forward APA that looks and tastes like pineapple, orange, mango, and grapefruit. The complex fruit character is the result of the careful combination of our favorite current-crop-year hops.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Mild bitterness with light malt sweetness. Earthy-spicy lemon hops character, slightly grassy, very mild cracker malt. Some nice pine aroma, with stone fruit: peaches and cherry. With time, more citrus comes through.”

Flavor: “Citrus is strong enough here to hit first, with an earthy, somewhat grassy, backdrop. Nice soft, grainy, and subtly sweet malt character. The hops pair well and add spicy and light citrus notes. Finishes super dry and slightly bitter with light cherry notes.”

Overall: “Nice citrus character, almost delicate throughout, the aroma is really enticing with hints of lemon, pepper, and toasted malt. The flavor is similar, even if in the finish those flavors run together and miss the clarity of the best in this style.

Odell Brewing Co Drumroll Hazy Pale Ale

Robust head. Dank, tropical aroma with an ashy note. In the flavor, tropical and citrus fruit dominate—a Limoncello bite, with grainy malt backbone that stands up well to the bitterness and juicy flavor. Easy sipper. Great sweet-bitter balance. Very approachable.

Alaskan Brewing Company Freeride APA

**Aroma:** “Presents a hops character that’s mostly floral with moderate esters, citrus fruit aromas with some stone fruit, and pine hops in the background. Some sweet caramel buttery notes in the malt. Hops aroma drops fairly quickly.” **Flavor:** “Earthy, grassy hops flavor with a touch of spicy. Bitterness is here but not pronounced. Finish is as much ester as it is hops. Reasonable malt backing provides medium sweetness against the prominent fruity hops profile. Finishes dry with a nice bitterness. Peach and orange hops flavor is more subdued than the aroma promises. Body is full, but high carbonation lightens body. Sweet malt flavors linger.” **Overall:** “A nice example of a less hops-centric take on the style. Tasty beer, easy drinking, and not too assertive. Nicely done representation of the style—balance is appropriate as is lingering bitterness. Very nice, on the sweeter/maltier end of the American pale ale spectrum.”

Two Roads S.H.O.P. Series Pale Ale

Aroma: “Lemon and orange peel with a touch of pine at first and then intense mango and pineapple aromas from the hops. Some grassy and herbal, slightly dank notes appear once the initial fruit dissipates. Subtle light bready malt background.” Flavor: “Light, clean, simple body. Hops bitterness slightly overpowers the malt and lingers. Same citrus and pine as in aroma. Aftertaste is dry with a moderate lasting of hop spiciness. Overall: “This beer pushes the bounds and rides the edge of the IPA style now that IPAs are embracing lower perceived bitterness levels. Still, the earthy and spicy hop profile is complex, and a moderate carbonation gives it a good bite. Easy drinking and refreshing.”
