Surly Brewing Co Hell

What the brewers say

"A pale-gold lager with bready malt and floral hops aromas and flavors."

What our panel thought

"A pronounced hops bitterness on the finish is bracing and almost drowns out the malt profile. Still, for those looking for a helles with hops, this will satisfy. Traditionalists might bemoan the end result. It's hard to have more than two."

What our editors thought

"Faint wildflowers and a touch of honey sweetness on the nose. The sip is carbonic and light with an ever-so-slight and palate-cleansing bitterness that makes for a perfect ending."

4 Noses Brewing Company Foeder Helles

“Hints of stone fruit and a light banana in the aroma complement more pronounced floral hops and clean malt notes. A touch of woody tannin creates a pleasant, defined edge over the sweet, grainy malt, and herbal, floral bitterness—tempering the sweetness and softening the bitterness.”

Wayfinder Beer Export 66

“Bright citrus intertwines with herbal, floral notes; light bread floats in the background. Slight sweetness up front; citrus and herbs remain teammates in flavor. Distinct floral bitterness. Dries out nicely. Could have a few rounds of this on a hot patio.”

Two Roads Brewing Two Juicy

__Aroma:__ “Bright tropical flavors, mango, papaya, pineapple, and passion fruit. Light malt sweetness that just enhances the intense fruitiness. Interesting notes of pine and onion mixed with light floral notes. Very intriguing.” __Flavor:__ “The intense fruitiness from the aroma continues into the flavor. If the color weren’t golden straw, I might be convinced I was drinking Hawaiian Punch. Just a slight amount of bitterness on the back end provides a nod to the base style ‘IPA,’ but the hops flavor is the star. For as fresh as the hops flavors are, there is little hops bite or yeasty burn common in rushed versions of this style.” __Overall:__ A beautifully intense juicy hops-forward beer that captures the style expertly without falling prey to some of the pitfalls of the style. Very drinkable.”
