Brouwerij van Hoegaarden Hoegaarden Wit Blanche

What the brewers say

“This beer features the aroma of orange peel, coriander, and herbs that the merry monks imported from Curaçao. Pouring Hoegaarden is just like letting the sun fall into your glass: light yellow and naturally murky. And then there’s the soft taste, light and slightly sweet and sour and with subtle citrus notes.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Nice balance of spice and herbal notes with sweet citrus and wheat character. Floral notes of jasmine and rose petals. Hints of herbal notes and spicy black pepper. Slightly medicinal phenolic character. Big coriander aroma, some spice, but not much else.”

Flavor: “Complex spice and herbal notes. Coriander and pepper balance with orange peel and citrus. Creaminess and light but earthy sweetness come through from the wheat. A bit of a plastic phenolic aftertaste. Light citrus. Very crisp yet creamy mouthfeel. Dry finish.”

Overall: “A good example of a wit, with nice acidity and sweetness. Easy to drink and refreshing. Well balanced, though the phenols border on unpleasant.”

Brewery Ommegang Witte

**Aroma:** “Very floral aroma with slight caramel notes in front of the wheat. Nice floral coriander notes and slight citrus. Hints of herbs. Almost a banana-like ester.” **Flavor:** “Nice sweetness of honey and citrus orange fruitiness with notes of ly- chee. Slight wheat flavor and light earthy hop character. Earthy pepper notes are present. Sweet, almost banana profile. Nice balance of acidity and carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. No flaws, but almost more like a hefeweizen than a wit.” **Overall:** “Excellent. Great balance. Sweet and refreshing wit with an acidic lactic taste gives a good finish. Very nice profile of yeast characteristics. Very fresh coriander.”

Coors Brewing Company Blue Moon Belgian White

**Aroma:** “Citrus orange notes come through with spicy pepper and coriander aromas. Malt sweetness in the back. Floral and almost spicy aroma. Slight grain sweetness with hints of lemon zest. Coriander aroma is slightly stale, bordering on artificial.” **Flavor:** “Good balance of acidity and malt background with a creamy mouthfeel. Coriander and some spicy pepper notes. Good balance of citrus orange sweetness with peppery and spicy flavor. A bit too thick and chewy for the style, but nice acidic carbonation.” **Overall:** “A good example of the style, but just a bit too heavy and sweet. Still, a refreshing, complex take on a wit. Spices, tartness, and sweetness carry through. Good balance of citrus and spice.”
