What the brewers say

“Hofbräu Maibock has the longest pedigree of all Munich’s Bocks. Its aromatic flavor and alcoholic content of approximately 7.2% by volume makes it one of the best creations from Hofbräu’s brewing kettles. Hofbräu Maibock marks one of the high points in the beer-lover’s calendar!”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Medium sweet malt, subtly backed up by woody noble hops. Slight sulfur from lager yeast. Malty nose is generally sweet with touches of toffee and toast.”

Flavor: “Sweet, slightly sticky malt barely supported by restrained hops bitterness. Some astringency in the aftertaste. Some fruity cherry notes. Big malt, but not too sweet. Pils and toffee. Definitely warming with plenty of alcohol. Mild hops flavor. Remarkable bitterness. Finish isn’t very crisp.”

Overall: “A well-made, malt-focused lager. Crisp hops bitterness saves this from being cloying. Malt is good, but there’s a flatness to it that disappoints. Sweet, but good malt profile. Hops keep it from being too sweet.”
