Jack's Abby House Lager (2019)

What the brewers say

"What the Helles is a Landbier? Ours is sweet and golden with a full malty body, inspired by the country lagers of Bavaria."

What our panel thought

"A spicy hops character dominates the beer, and the malt bill has a caramel quality to it that leaves a cloying character on the finish. It's a beer that you can play beer pong with, share at a cookout, or nurse over a good book. Does it change the world? No. But that's not the point of this style."

What our editors thought

"Cracker malt on the nose teases a sweetness that (thankfully) never materializes, as a gently pointed carb levitates that light but characterful malt right over the tongue."

Jack's Abby House Lager

Aroma: “All the peach flavors, from flesh to skin, jump out immediately. Maybe it’s the vanilla and cinnamon, but it even has a peach pit aroma.” Flavor: “Pronounced acidity immediately upfront, but rolls into a wonderful peach juiciness. The spices are subtle, the peach is the star of the show, with a nice lingering mild sweetness that helps balance out the acidity.” Overall: “Aside from wanting more cinnamon to shine through, I love this beer. Great balance and drinkability for style. A satisfying, warming, and comforting presentation of peach.”

The nose presents a blend of Malt-o-Meal, lightly baked bread, and spruce-tinged herbal hops. The flavor pulls back a little to the same hops but a light, simple toasty malt with a hint of caramel sweetness. Finish is mostly dry, with lingering bitterness. Simple but easy-sipping.

Jack's Abby Post Shift

Moderate hops aroma up front with a light cracker malt behind it. Hops are melon, lemongrass, and tea-like. Herbal and citrus. Low sweetness and moderately low bitterness with just enough body to keep it from being watery. Dry finish with a bit of lingering bitterness. Crisp and drinkable.
