Idle Hands Craft Ales Helga

What the brewers say

Helga is our representation of the classic rauchbiers of Bamberg, but with an added twist from the use of cherrywood-smoked malt.

What our panel thought

Aroma is a bit acrid—scorched malt with touches of peat and honey. On the palate, mild smoke blends smoothly with sweet pilsner malt and light, spicy hops. Malt pairs nicely with smoke, like smoked sausage on a Ritz cracker. Creamy finish.

What our editors thought

Light fruitiness punctuates faint smoke in the nose. The sip foregoes lager precision for a lightly sweet, dulled malt character, with notes of orange and lime. The result is a mishmash that doesn’t quite feel intentional.

REVIEWS FOR YOU >

West Sixth Brewing Co Valencia Berliner Weisse

“Light, tart, citrusy. Orange aroma is reminiscent of digging your fingernails into a fresh easy-peeler. On tasting, it’s more lemony up front but shifts to orange mid-sip with a slight graininess to the malt character. Perhaps needs a bit more carbonation for a refreshing summer-afternoon sipper.”

Arizona Wilderness Brewing Puffy w/ Passion Fruit

“Captures the essence of dragon fruit with a pleasant soft cider-like tartness to balance, providing fruitiness, subtle spice, and earth notes. And there’s a distinctive beer character with a lightly toasted malt backbone.”

Idle Hands Craft Ales Splitter

“Sweet citrus with a distinct alcohol note and light peppery phenolics. Pineapple juice flavor, with a light grassy hop note. Also mango and citrus. A subtle bite on the finish. Soft on the palate and very well-balanced. Well put-together; will satisfy juiceheads.”
