Melvin Brewing Eureka (House of Flying Barrels) West Coast Drip

What the brewers say

“DDH West Coast–style IPA with Galaxy, Mosaic, and Vic Secret.”

What our panel thought

“Sulfury diesel-fuel hop aroma dominates. Light grapefruit, lemon, and pine notes follow. Simple but defined malt backbone of biscuit and pie crust. Businesslike bitterness. Spicy black pepper, anise, light diesel, pine, lemon, and grassy notes in the flavor. Dry finish with a firm lingering bitterness.”

What our editors thought

“Overt and almost stinky with deep tropical and diesel aromas. The sip blunts the sharpness of the nose with a wide tropical-fruit and glycerol-like body.”

Humble Sea Brewing Co Hop Innovation Station

“Intriguing nose of fresh-cut pine, juniper, hints of Pixy Stix and white wine. Taste is more floral with carnation and pineapple, citrus and stone fruit. Modern take on a classic. Touch of alcohol burn at the finish.”

Stone Brewing Stone Ruination IPA

“Perfumy floral hop aroma, similar to rose hips and slight lemongrass. Bold resinous piney hop character gives this beer a strong bitter finish. Although the beer finishes balanced, this is an assertive, hop-forward brew with hard-hitting bitterness. Heavily floral.”

Melvin Brewing Eureka (House of Flying Barrels) Mystic Tigers

“Vibrant pink. Generic aroma of tropical-fruit punch. The passion fruit comes out very late in the retrosnasal and lingers. More tropical fruit in the flavor, with low sweetness into moderately strong but not harsh acidity. Extremely dry, leaving a puckering, astringent finish.”
