Lagunitas Brewing Night Pils

What the brewers say

“Night Pils marries everything we know about making black IPA and Pils. The dark malt backbone brings notes of chocolate and dark fruits while the lager yeast provides a crisp, clean finish. The result is a beer that looks like a stout but drinks like a lager.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Moderately hoppy up front with a citrus and herbal character. There seems to be a mix of New School and more traditional hops. Behind the hops, there’s a bit of chocolate, rich Munich-type malt, and a touch of roast.”

Flavor: “More citrus in the flavor up front with lemongrass and herbal hops. The malt is fairly light, and there’s background chocolate and rich malt. Moderate sweetness up front into high bitterness in the finish that’s quite astringent. There’s a low alcohol warmth in the finish as well.”

Overall: “An interesting attempt at hybridizing styles. Has aspects of the clean, dry, crisp drinkability of a Pilsner, with a unique color and harsh roast malt flavors.”

Green's IPA

**Aroma:** “Fruity and musty hops, green onion; dank, resiny hops character with a touch of caramel candy-like sweetness and a bit of green-apple character. Some grassiness and hints of tomato and Windex.” **Flavor:** “Strong green-onion flavor with some resiny, citrusy hops character. Little malt-like sweetness beyond a touch of caramel, but some candy-like sweetness that is a bit astringent and sharp; substantial hops bitterness. New- school hops flavors of tropical fruits and grapefruit. Medium-high carbonation.” **Overall:** “Hops carry the beer, and the body provides some nice sweetness, but the astringency from gluten-free malt overwhelms the hops character. A bit more body in the finish than most—a welcome change. The taste is hoppy enough and the medium sweetness brings across enough of an IPA-like experience that hopheads should be somewhat satisfied.”

Alaskan Brewing Co. Icy Bay IPA

**Aroma:** “Very juicy, sweet aroma (pineapple, orange, and lemonade); hints of kiwi and grape and a bit of honey. Some mineral quality. Pilsner or pale malt sweetness comes through as well, a bit high for the category. Hops are subtle and muted, but come through as citrus and pine.” **Flavor:** “Initial smack of hops bitterness and fruity flavors (lemon candy, fruit loops). Progresses quickly to a light cracker-like malt sweetness. Finishes very dry. Very light body. A slightly slick, oily finish. Hops are much more subtle than desired for the category, drinking more like a light pale ale or potentially a session IPA.” **Overall:** “This beer starts out fruity and finishes dry. It’s a very light beer, but still manages to squeeze in quite a bit of flavor for its low ABV. Needs more hops punch in the flavor, aroma, and finish. Pilsner/pale malt sweetness prevails more than it should.”

Revolution Brewing Company Rise

**Aroma:** “Hops! Fruity passion fruit, orange, lemon, grapefruit, dank resinous in the background—if I didn't see the color, I’d expect an IPA. Some dark roast and chocolate sweetness sneak through once your nose is dead to the hops. Light tart note. As it warms, a slight molasses note starts to mix with the hops.” **Flavor:** “High hops flavor up front with bit citrus notes. Moderate chocolate with big roasty notes support the hops. Quite sweet up front. Sweetness slowly fades into a low bitterness. Toward the end, slight smoke note but big hops that continue into the aftertaste with a mix of roast. Dry, bitter hoppy finish. As it warms, the smoke turns into a burnt molasses note. Very fruity: passion fruit and pineapple. Finish is sweet and lingers. Rich chewy body that doesn’t come across as thick. Big pine and orange flavors from the hops. Chocolate from the malt gives it a chocolate orange flavor. The sweetness comes together with all the different bold flavors and finishes with a slightly dry finish.” **Overall:** “A nice balance of stout and hops, but if you don’t like hops, this stout is not for you. Strong flavors all around with a touch of alcohol warming in the background to fill it all out. Good balance of hops flavor and bitterness. This is a very different take on a stout—kind of a black IPA more than a stout. This beer tastes like a better, less sweet version of those chocolate-covered orange candy sticks, but with a heavy dose of pine richness. Very tasty!”
