Original Ritterguts Gose

What the brewers say

“Our Original Ritterguts Gose is an old-style beer specialty of Leipzig, brewed to the authentic recipe by traditional methods. Ritterguts Gose has won several accolades, including a gold medal at the World Beer Awards.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet tart acidity is present in the nose, with fruity notes of apple, cherries, dark grape, and some sweet wheat. Light lemon and salt, with very faint malt and some earthy funk. Light sour emerges as it warms. Overall, the aromas are light, refreshing, and unassertive.”

Flavor: “Hints of apple with some mild tartness, and the noticeable salty character adds flavor. The malt expresses a bread-like sweetness with some subtle spices that add complexity. Lactic tartness hits up front and carries through the finishing sip. The moderate grape adds a touch of light, watery vinegar for background depth. A dry carbonic bite carries in the finish.”

Overall: “A little high on the salt and low on the carbonation, but still refreshing. A bit more body would have rounded it out, but overall, some great subtle fruit flavors. Straightforward and highly drinkable.”

Brasserie de Blaugies Saison D’Epeautre

**Aroma:** “Light lemongrass note with low peppery esters. Medium white-grape note with a mild sweetness and slight apple and _Brett_ notes. Big lemon and earthy funk. Wet hay.” **Flavor:** “Fruity grape notes with a light lemon note and a high carbonic bite toward the end of the sip. Light body. Farmhouse characteristics with an apricot tartness. There’s a bit of sweetness up front that plays well with the citrus and quickly transforms into moderate acidity and low bitterness. Very dry finish and moderate-high carbonation.” **Overall:** “The subtle herbal and earthy notes provide balance and give this beer a refreshing and inviting flavor and aroma while complementing the blend of citrus and funk notes. Tart dry finish with moderate-high carbonation makes this very refreshing, and the mild acidity/tartness balances the expectation of sweetness.”

Jackie O's Gose

“A lightly funky aroma with notes of pepper, salt, smoke, leather, and wet hay. A bright citric acidity and a pleasant salinity up front transcend into a soft lactic undertone with a refreshing blend of citrus and lactic notes.”

Genesee Brewing Company Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Moderate hops aroma that’s a little lush and perfumy, with quiet notes of fruits and flowers—like an early spring morning. Initially, some light yeast esters of pear and apple, complemented by the bread-crust malt.” **Flavor:** “The bready, biscuit maltiness up front is more prominent than in some Pilsners and combines well with the lemony hops bitterness. Fruity, floral, earthy notes, and a moderate alcohol warmth to add a slightly spicy taste. Well-balanced and inviting.” **Overall:** “The alcohol is a bit overdone, but the general balance is nice otherwise. The bitterness lasts for a while, without giving a harsh edge. Perfect after a hard day working or playing in the heat.”
