pFriem Family Brewers Rum Barrel Aged Porter

What the brewers say

"We age our Imperial Porter for a year in barrels kissed by the Caribbean, giving pFriem’s Rum Barrel Aged Porter notes of chocolate truffles, ripe cherries and vanilla beans. Drink in this captivating brew and taste luscious decadence."

What our panel thought

“Light alcohol, smoke, and pepper-like spice waft out of a roast-malt-forward aroma. Sweet notes of caramel, chocolate, and vanilla transition to a roasty bitterness, with hints of pepper on the finish.”

What our editors thought

“Slightly dulled chocolate nose, knocked down with time and age. The sip is similarly muted, with light chocolate cola and slight herbal bent. The reductive nature is difficult to dislike, but also lacks a certain spark.”

Creature Comforts Brewing Concurrence No. 5

Sweet, rich, cream-and-sugar nose—coffee, vanilla, caramel ice cream, coconut, low oak. Smooth, full body like sweet Turkish coffee. Nice finishing bitterness to balance—sweet, not sticky.

Cape May Brewing King Porter Stomp

Aroma: “Moderate floral hops dominate. Light coffee roast underneath. Grassy hops with a hint of citrus and mint. Dry cocoa/chocolate, almost dusty. Alcohol evident.” Flavor: “Very roast-forward espresso and sweet dark chocolate. Bitterness is firm and a touch harsh. Borderline black IPA territory. Chocolate flavor is medium strong, lingering into the aftertaste.” Overall: “Drinkable, but more malt sweetness and richness would balance the combination of roast and hops bitterness. Kind of like a Cascadian IPA without the aroma-hops character to keep things in check.”

pFriem Family Brewers Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout

Licorice, molasses, sweet tobacco, and chocolate-cake aromatics. Roasted dark cacao, wet wood, smoke on the tongue that lingers for a while. A divisive offering: some will love it, some will hate it.
