New Belgium Brewing Rampant

What the brewers say

“A burly and bitter Imperial IPA, Rampant pours a pure copper and carries the sheen of a rightly hopped beer. The Mosaic and Calypso hops bring stone fruit to the front seat, and the addition of Centennial nods toward citrus for a well-rounded aroma. The taste expands these hops with heavy peach tones and a profoundly bitter bite. There is some malt sweetness to stand this beer up, and Rampant’s finish is bone-dry.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Moderate malt sweetness with orange and grapefruit hops notes.”

Flavor: “There was a vegetal, almost dill, quality to the flavor. The juicy tropical hops flavors were strong. Maybe there’s something else in there—coriander maybe? Tastes like a bit of Sorachi Ace hops.”

Overall: “While this beer departs from the style a bit, it’s a very enjoyable beer. It’s a unique take.”

Trillium Brewing Company Artaic

**Aroma:** “A blend of juicy fruit character and grassy earthiness from the hops. Deep fruit character pulls on tropical-fruit notes and citrus character. Grapefruit dominates, with some blood orange and black peppercorn notes. Spicy!” **Flavor:** “Very juicy notes of mango and melon, some pineapple, maybe a little strawberry-like flavor. Some juice-like sweetness complements the sweetness of the malt. Maybe a hint of saltiness? Deep herbal components suggest oregano and cumin.” **Overall:** “A little bit of every hops character from ‘the list’ but predominately dank and fruity. This is a fairly sweet DIPA that goes light on the bitterness, pulls out more fruit flavor from the hops with the slight sweetness, and really showcases gorgeous hops flavors. Would pair well with a dessert—a great palate cleanser. Very unique take on the style that’s delicious and intriguing.”

Southern Tier Brewing Company Grand Arbor

**Aroma:** “Strange herbal character complemented by layers of malt sweetness. Prominent phenols up front. Orange and black pepper with alcohol heat. Spicy yeast character with bananas and maple syrup.” **Flavor:** “Sweet honey and syrup alongside lemon citrus. High caramel malt sweetness somewhat balanced with acidity. Light maple character, medium body, and medium bitterness. Dry finish with a carbonic bite.” Overall: “Very enjoyable, though a bit too sweet. Nice and complex. Balance is skewed toward malt sweetness. Sweet, but surprisingly dry. Gets better as it warms. Jagged.”

Port Brewing Company Mongo Double IPA

**Aroma:** “Strong orange and pineapple with a bit of pine. Bready/toasty malt. Some perfume-like character.” **Flavor:** “Assertive bitterness hits first and provides the context for everything else. The hops flavor slips in behind the bitter, with grapefruit and a woody pine, some pineapple and tropical fruit. Toasty malt adds body and a little sweetness. Nice juiciness, but finishes slightly dry.” **Overall:** “Very drinkable! Tastes like a great example of a West Coast IIPA in terms of both hops and the body brought in by the malt bill. The character of the bitterness is nice.”
