Anheuser-Busch InBev Shock Top Belgian White

What the brewers say

“We’ve shaken up traditional tastes by brewing a spiced Belgian-style wheat ale with real orange, lemon, and lime peels and then added a little coriander spice to the mix. This award-winning ale is unfiltered to create a brew that is naturally cloudy with a light golden color and a smooth, refreshing finish.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Light, malty wheat sweetness accented by barely there coriander and orange. Some light floral and spice notes. Nose is hard to detect, almost absent. More spice than wheat.”

Flavor: “Malty sweet with some acidity and some coriander. Nice sweet profile of fruity notes, orange, citrus with floral and pepper notes. Medium wheat character and balanced earthy hops flavors. Slight slickness on the tongue. Finish is sweet rather than crisp but has good acidity.”

Overall: “Tastes carbonated despite no head. A crisp version of a wit. Nice sweetness and easy drinking. This beer could be excellent with a little more crispness and a little residual sweetness.”

Coors Brewing Company Blue Moon Belgian White

**Aroma:** “Citrus orange notes come through with spicy pepper and coriander aromas. Malt sweetness in the back. Floral and almost spicy aroma. Slight grain sweetness with hints of lemon zest. Coriander aroma is slightly stale, bordering on artificial.” **Flavor:** “Good balance of acidity and malt background with a creamy mouthfeel. Coriander and some spicy pepper notes. Good balance of citrus orange sweetness with peppery and spicy flavor. A bit too thick and chewy for the style, but nice acidic carbonation.” **Overall:** “A good example of the style, but just a bit too heavy and sweet. Still, a refreshing, complex take on a wit. Spices, tartness, and sweetness carry through. Good balance of citrus and spice.”

Allagash Brewing Company White

**Aroma:** “Very light wheat with notes of coriander and a little bit of hop spice blended with slight sweetness and subtle hop notes. Mainly coriander and pepper notes.” **Flavor:** “Moderate sweetness with a strong bittering finish. Significantly more hop bitterness than would be expected for the style. Complex for a wit, with slight sweetness and herbal earthy notes. Sweet citrus in the finish. Big body despite carbonation and crispness. Almost a viscous mouthfeel.” **Overall:** “Wheat and spice character are well done, but the hop utilization or timing adds a bitterness that’s atypical for the style. A refreshing and different take on a wit. More spiced than usual but still finishes with sweet citrus. Good, crisp, refreshing beer.”

Brooklyn Brewery East IPA

__Aroma:__ “Earthy spice, some mint, with a touch of orange and lemon. Some biscuit malt sweetness. A little caramel. Lightly toasted malt plays second fiddle to the hops. The aroma seems very Belgian.” __Flavor:__ “Smooth and refreshing for an IPA. Malt sweetness of biscuit and a little caramel. Some fruity notes of orange, a little grapefruit with some mild bitterness, and some mint. There is a earthy, nutty character to the flavor as well. The beer dries out through the taste and the hops bitterness carries through the finish. There’s a touch of apricot in the retronasal that brings complexity to the palate.” __Overall:__ “Given the minty character, I’m assuming Northern Brewer hops. The rest of the beer is pretty standard IPA, but the mint is interesting and slightly confusing. Reminds me of Lagunitas Lemon Drop. Light. Fairly refreshing.”
