Side Project Brewing Le Saisonnier

What the brewers say

Oak-aged Missouri farmhouse ale.

What our panel thought

Funky bouquet of citrus pith, earth, leather, peach, vanilla, and hints of sour cherry. Gently tart flavor with soft, pillowy malt and round funky-yeasty flavors that play nicely together. Subtle oak and grape-like notes. Delicate, dry, stone-fruit finish. Get me a big bottle of this with cheese and crackers.

What our editors thought

Light, powdery nose with white flowers, linen, old parchment, and faint lime and yuzu. In the sip, a light woody note juxtaposes with a soft lemony tartness, resolving into a light citrus hit. So simple, so light, so full of flavor.

Boulevard Brewing Long Strange Tripel

**Aroma:** “Everything is there: black pepper, bananas, tree fruits, and hint of alcohol, but it’s all a bit subdued. Light refreshing spiciness with a hint of hops and a breath of sweet malt.” **Flavor:** “Initially sweet and spicy with some citrus. Appropriate level of bitterness and carbonation. Grain malt sweetness followed by restrained but obvious esters of bubblegum and ba- nanas and a touch of lemon peel. Floral hops flavor followed by a not unpleasant bitterness. Off-dry finish could benefit from just a smidge more attenuation. High carbonation, and the beer finishes with a fruity alcohol kick.” **Overall:** “A little more subtle than the usual tripel. Neither 100 percent classic nor 100 percent avant garde, this take on a tripel will satisfy fans of the style looking for something a touch different while still pleasing those who prefer a classic interpretation.”

Wiley Roots Funk Yo Couch Nelson Sauvin

Gin, grapefruit pith, lemon peel, low oak, and background funk. Earthy, citrus-forward funk carries into huge tropical-fruit flavor. Harmonious. Some gentle acidity brightens the flavors. The Brett brings it all together. Digging this.

Side Project Brewing Grisette

Bright citrus, tart cherry, and stone fruit aromatics blend with hints of leather, spice and funk, creating a lively nose. The flavor is a bit more subdued with hints of apple and pear playing off a peppery spice note, but it all comes together harmoniously with just enough acidity to notice but not distract.
