What the brewers say

“Rich, bitter, and chuggable.”

What our panel thought

“Floral and herbal hop notes emerge out of a roast malt–forward aroma with hints of toast, coffee, and dark caramel. The combination of the bitter roast malt flavors and the floral hops creates an impression of soapiness that really cranks up the perceived bitterness. Clean and crisp roast-forward lager, but assertively bitter.”

What our editors thought

“Subtle sophisticated smoke in the nose, and a nice smoky edge in the sip. Feels rich, with a broad body and tighter herbal hop notes that amplify the roast.”

Devil's Club Brewing Alaska Pure Mountain Spring Lager

“Subtle floral notes at the outset, hint of roses. Toasted potato bun flavor with a wisp of plum-like fruitiness. Relatively full-bodied but the high carbonation and touch of hop bitterness help balance the finish. Herbal hops don’t quite mesh, but overall, an enjoyable beer.”

12 West Brewing ZONA

Floral, almost soapy, with spicy noble-hops notes and a slightly heavy sweet malt background. Rich body adds some nice grainy complexity, but the finish comes across a bit heavy for a Pilsner. Reminiscent of a stronger pre-Prohibition American light lager with hints of corn sweetness, pleasant hops character, and just a touch of bitterness to balance.

Bend Brewing Co Black Diamond Dark Lager

“The nose is a pleasant balance of toffee, dark chocolate, coffee, and toasted malt with hints of floral and perfume-like hops. The borderline-acrid roast notes overpower the flavor profile and wash out much of the subtle nuance. Clean and crisp, but the bitter elements are a bit over the top.”
