Four Peaks Brewing Company Sirius Black

What the brewers say

“Sirius Black is our Russian lmperial Stout to which we have added more complexity by adding locally roasted Indian Monsooned Malabar coffee and licorice root to the beer. It has an intense roasted malt and coffee aroma with flavors of toffee and caramel as well as a slight alcoholic "heat."

What our panel thought

Aroma: “The big oak and coffee notes play off each other well, with the chocolate and roast to support underneath. Dark cherry esters, oaky vanilla, oak char, whiskey vanilla, and tobacco, with a hint of maple.”

Flavor: “The chewy woody oak is a bit overpowering. Low to medium vanilla presences reminds me of French oak, and it blends with the peach and cherry notes coming from the coffee and the beer. Some sweet cherry, sherry, dates, and marzipan. Very thin-bodied, more like an old ale than an imperial stout. Great caramel and toast malt character, and the roast and chocolate notes help to blend the flavors. Some fusel alcohols and whiskey, with tobacco and vanilla, as well as a mild hops flavor and bitterness.”

Overall: “There’s a lightness to this beer that was unexpected, likely from the lighter stone fruit esters, but the body and vanilla help as well. The barrel character isn’t overdone and adds a nice complexity without drowning out or muddling the coffee stout underneath. However, the boozy-whiskey with the overpowering char from the barrel lose the beer element. It’s a nice beer, but it’s thin and tastes out of its style.”

MadTree Brewing Barrel-Aged Axis Mundi

**Aroma:** “Rich chocolate and high vanilla aromas (a full bean in every bottle?) with a touch of marshmallow. Vanilla starts to take over the aroma, with a medium alcohol note toward the back. Moderate cinnamon, light spicy note and light coffee. There’s a hint of roast underneath, but I have to dig my way through cream soda, white chocolate, and vanilla shortbread to find it.” **Flavor:** “High vanilla and moderate spiciness that extends into the aftertaste with medium roast notes. Light earthy hops and some light chocolate with a mildly roasted coffee in the background that becomes more prominent as I sample more. A nice alcohol warming at the end of the sip.” **Overall:** “A lot of vanilla! Dab some of this behind your ears before you go out, and your date will nuzzle you during the slow dances. It will probably get some people to try a stout, and that’s good.”

Thirsty Dog Brewing Company Barrel-Aged Siberian Night

**Aroma:** “A prominent roastiness, with even a touch char and black licorice. A light sweet chocolate rounds it out, but the roast dominates. Nice sweet malt roast. Chocolate. Some vanilla. Toast.” **Flavor:** “Moderately sweet cherry chocolate with a touch of roast and some vanilla underneath. A nice chocolaty flavor, but it has a hard time rising over the roast. Some barrel character, but overall the roast dominates.” **Overall:** “Fairly true to style in all respects. The heat on the finish is a bit detracting. Other than that, pretty easy drinking. A singularly roast-forward stout with just a touch of barrel character. The chocolate was nice, but the booze was pretty hot throughout this beer.”

Hi-Wire Brewing Strongman Coffee Stout

__Aroma:__ “Roasted coffee aroma and an earthy floral note that really shine through. Behind that sits dark chocolate.” __Flavor:__ “The beer starts and finishes a little thin—fresh coffee leads, with some burned roastiness and creamy sweetness (as if they added a couple cubes of sugar). Subtle molasses and cocoa notes follow, along with some tobacco for balance. It’s big on flavor and easy to drink, delivering on all the things you hope from a stout.” __Overall:__ “The coffee had a roasty quality similar to fresh espresso—gotta like a cup of coffee! It has pronounced sweetness in the middle that lingers, and the balance between that and the roasted coffee is great. It’s a fantastic stout that really showcases coffee, and the lovely milk sweetness and coffee provide a great beer.”
