SKA Brewing Mexican Style Lager Dark

What the brewers say

A dark lager—smooth and slightly malty-sweet. Balanced, mild hop-bitterness.

What our panel thought

Bright, copper brown–good head that retains well. Assertive chocolate malt in the nose, dressed with a bit of toasty malt, light floral hops, and a light coffee edge. Firm roast in the well-rounded flavor—nuts, toast, biscuit, and chocolate in balance, with light, clean, complementary floral-herbal hop flavor. Fairly creamy. Very drinkable. A bit richer than a Negra Modelo. Quite pleasant.

What our editors thought

Well-done toast with a light coffee-roast note on the nose—faint, but ever-so-slightly sweet. The sip tugs between dark caramel on one side and light roast-plus-hops bitterness on the other, with a slightly acidic malt tinge that lends it a bit of sharpness.

New Image Brewing Co Tigre Especial

“Delightfully full of character. Great white-bread aroma, sweet corn perfume, with a mineral-like carbonation. A moderate bitterness breathes some hop spiciness in there. Soft tortilla malt character finishes very clean on retronasal exhale. Venturing toward Bavarian but remains easy-drinking, easy to return to. Well attenuated and beautifully quaffable.”

Westbound & Down Brewing Company The Coloradan

Sweet, corny nose with some welcome lemony and floral-grassy hints. Sweet, grainy flavor, but with a good balance of bitterness. Light-bodied. Clean, crisp, drying finish. Light malt and faint bitterness linger in the aftertaste then vanish. Pretty damn elegant. Subtle, clean, endearing.

Phase Three Brewing P3 Dark Czech-Style Lager

“The roast and chocolate malt nose is almost porter-like, but the flavor rekindles memories of tmavé in Prague. A hint of sulfur in the aroma as it warms. Brown, clear, lovely head that retains well. Pronounced, but soft, toast, milk chocolate, and bread crust. Dark malt melds with plum and cocoa notes to bring pleasant depth, but the finish is clean and smooth. The floral and spicy hop character pushes it farther away from porter, all while staying in perfect harmony. Light fig and cherry from malt esters. Distinct and well-presented flavors, thoughtfully defined with impressive balance. Finishes dry as the toast and chocolate linger. Inviting aroma with flavors that keep you at the table.”
