What the brewers say

Pitch-black in appearance. Chocolate and roasted malts dominate the flavor, supported by notes of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. Locally roasted coffee from Ryan Bros. Coffee brings out the beer’s dark chocolate.

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Some bittersweet chocolate notes up front with a pleasant coffee note. Dark and roasted malt notes. Coffee is restrained but pleasant.”

Flavor: “Very smooth malt roast character. Malt sweetness of caramel, some toffee, slight vanilla, and coffee that rounds out the beer in the finish with a slight sweetness. Great chocolate profile and a nice balance of malty sweetness and delicious roast and coffee/dark chocolate character. A wonderfully sophisticated chocolate character that hides the booze well.”

Overall: “Well-executed coffee stout that exhibits great coffee flavor on top of solid base beer support. Chocolate and a touch of dark fruit character lend a nice complexity. Alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Excellent body—has a nice fullness without being heavy. A delicious beer that was well designed and well executed.”

AleSmith Brewing Company Barrel Aged Speedway Stout

**Aroma:** “Coffee and vanilla, bourbon notes up front with a touch of sweetness and a bit of alcohol in the nose. Some dark fruits, vanilla, and bourbon. Mild barrel flavors emerge as it warms—almond, vanilla, toasted oak.” **Flavor:** “Rich chocolate and coffee flavors dance on the tongue, hitting all flavor centers. Medium barrel characters do emerge above the chocolate/coffee copulation, but the complex malt profile is the feature. Caramel and coffee are intricately bound with oak tannins to create this gorgeous palette of flavors. Finish is spicy, earthy, and sweet.” **Overall:** “Awesome. Unreal. The coffee was insanely good and this beer is amazing. Dark fruit and chocolate and smooth coffee in perfect balance. Coffee and barrel character create a truly unique and incredible experience. A delicious beer that everyone should seek out.”

AleSmith Brewing Company Decadence

**Aroma:** “Pleasant, refreshing aroma. Moderate sweet wheat, light vanilla, very light oral hops, touch of cinnamon, big bready, light toasted malt. A mild wheat cereal note, but not much hint at things to come.” **Flavor:** “Honey-like sweetness, moder- ate oral hops, light vanilla, moderate white wheat bready avor, very light eth- anol warmth. Bitterness is suf cient to balance. Caramel notes offer complexity. For the high alcohol and malt sweetness, its refreshingly clean and crisp.” **Overall:** “Both refreshing to the palate and a refreshing take on a strong ale, this wheatwine is as straightforward as it is enjoyable. Well balanced smooth drinking beer. The sweetness of the wheat malt with a light hops bitterness makes this very easy to drink, especially at the alcohol strength. The simplicity of the malt bill really lets the complexity of wheat shine. Well executed and clean.”

Rodenbach Brewery Fruitage

__Aroma:__ “Black currant and dark cherry. Very inviting. Cherry pie richness with a sweet overtone from the malty base beer.” __Flavor:__ “Fresh cherry juice with some tartness that could be from the fruit itself. Fruity complexity from the cherry and elderberry is well complemented by the malty backbone of the base beer. Hints of raspberry and blackberry and a touch of lemon to make things pop a bit. Finishes relatively dry given the sweet body throughout with some tannins to make you want another sip.” __Overall:__ “Very juicy with a nice blend of berry flavors and very drinkable. If I wasn’t told I was drinking a beer, I could assume this was just the fresh cherry juice. This is a great dessert beer to pair with lemon chiffon or just have on its own. The richness fades quickly, thus avoiding being too rich.”
