Two Roads Brewing Co Rocket 2 Ruin Imperial Cold IPA

What the brewers say

“Fermented with a lager yeast in a process that results in a rounded hop flavor and clean mouthfeel.”

What our panel thought

“Gummi bears, light strawberry, cantaloupe, raspberry, blackberry on the nose. Malt sweetness in the sip is balanced with the bitterness from the hops and ends pleasantly dry.”

What our editors thought

“Instant classic nose with orange and forest over a warming malt base. Slightly sweet in the sip as the orange notes push forward; it grabs a bit more body than expected from the ‘cold’ moniker.”

Two Roads Brewing Co Road 2 Ruin Double IPA

“Hop-forward nose brings floral lemongrass and apricot. Malty backbone is well-balanced with a subtle hop fruitiness and bitter finish. Clean and bright. Great mouthfeel. More of a subtle, moderately bitter IPA with an inoffensively mild staying power.”

Bend Brewing Hophead Imperial IPA

Soft aroma; dank, sweaty, Szechuan-peppery notes partly overtake tropical-citrus. Easily likeable flavor makes up for it—round, crackery-malty, juicy—with firm bitterness that plays well with alcohol, lingering as zesty resin. Danker, rougher aspects in hop flavors contained by nice malt blanket.

Smuttynose Brewing Co. Big A IPA

**Aroma:** “More balanced in the nose than I’d expect: toasty malt and herbal hops. Lots of perfumy/floral esters, including some roses. Super clean and fresh. Lemon, orange, citrus fruit character. Slight malt sweetness. The net effect is more ESB than double IPA.” **Flavor:** “Slightly sweet malt backbone supports the hops well. Bitterness is mild throughout for the style. Big hops flavor, with peaches, mango, and herbal elements (something Italian). There's a pronounced malty sweetness, but it acts as a counterweight to the bitterness.” **Overall:** “Easy drinking and light on the palate for the style. Lacks some of the complexity that could be helped by a tweak to the malt bill. If the hops click for you, it’ll be great. Enjoyable with some sweet flavors, but didn’t blend the best.”
