Firestone Walker Brewing Company Union Jack IPA

What the brewers say

Union Jack showcases exceptional dry hop character with stunning pineapple, citrus, and piney aromas on the nose accompanied by honey-like malt aromatics. Double dry hopping brings bold grapefruit, tangerine, and citrus flavors that are contrasted by pale malt sweetness to balance this intense brew.

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Tropical fruit with some notes of mango, pineapple, and citrus with floral—almost perfume-like—qualities. Orange-creamsicle. Lemon zest. Little to no malt aroma. Interesting complexity.”

Flavor: “Floral, pineapple, tropical fruit sweetness that’s rounded out by an appropriate bitterness. Hop flavors are a little different than the aroma would suggest—more traditional NW flavors with citrus rind, tangerine, and mango notes followed by pine and floral. Bitterness is very nice and lingers appropriately in the finish.”

Overall: “Very nice, complex IPA showcasing tropical, piney hops in addition to citrus. Somewhat perfume-like in its floral quality. Unique IPA that stands out as one that takes chances and succeeds.”

Firestone Walker Union Jack 2020

Subdued aroma: pine resin, grapefruit peel, hay, bubblegum. Flavor starts moderately sweet—bread crust, light caramel—transitioning to moderately strong bitterness, clean and not harsh. Dry finish. Tastes traditional.

**Aroma:** “Bright fruit/citrus hop up front: lemon zest, subtle orange, some floral character, some wildflower honey notes. Slight alcohol notes. Light malt sweetness. Clean and crisp. Good level of complexity.” **Flavor:** “Fruity, intense hops carry through—pine, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, some cattiness. Bitterness compliments the rich malt profile well. Lingering bitterness.” **Overall:** “Very tasty DIPA with a complex hop profile and complex bitterness.”

Firestone Walker Brewing Co Hopnosis

“A beautiful bright gold in color; fluffy white head lingers. Nose has notes of toasted pine, citrus, blackberries, light black pepper. Citrus and pine intermingle in a balanced dance in aroma and flavor. Sappy pine doesn’t linger; moderate-plus bitterness fades into melon and marmalade. An almost pillowy mouthfeel really works well with these softer hop flavors, balanced by assertive bitterness. Nicely balanced finish, with a slight sweetness that leaves the tongue quickly and has you coming back for more. Really well executed.”
