Vallensons' Brewing Co. Dragon Lady Light and Heavy IPA

What the brewers say

“We are making a new style invented for the Gulf Coast of Texas called “Light and Heavy.” It’s an ale or lager, and it has to be light on the body but heavy on the aroma and ABV.”

What our panel thought

“Grassy hop aromas with some Noble hop character with very subtle coconut-like aroma and a white-wine-like finish. The toasted coconut in the nose suggest Sabro hops, but there’s also caramel malt and toffee that seem out of style. The flavor doubles down.”

What our editors thought

“Minimal lime coconut aroma. Cracker malt in the sip with subtle lime hints and just a touch of grassy bitterness.”

Terrapin Beer Hoppin’ Bubbly

Toast and light fruit up front, pleasant and relatively delicate. Lush strawberry and hints of orange peel. Dry-ish on the finish but not as bracing as a lot of versions of the style. Finish has great balance with lingering pine bitterness.

Soul Fire Brewing Co Frances

Nice roast malt aromatics of coffee, toffee, caramel, toast, and bread crust balance well with some subtle but pleasant floral hop notes. The sip leans quite hard into the roast and toes the line of becoming heavy handed. The caramel, toffee, and coffee notes are well balanced and enjoyable, but they seem to come across a bit more reminiscent of a dunkel or a brown ale. The finish is clean, lightly bitter and crisp. A clean, easy drinking, and enjoyable roast forward lager that doesn't care what style you call it. It will be consumed rapidly nonetheless. Bright copper color with sticky off white foam. Some lightly roasted malt aromas followed by coffee and bread crust. Really nice grassy malt flavors throughout. The bitterness matches the sweetness really well allowing for structure and drinkability. Finishes quick and clean. This beer may be a bit roasty for Vienna Lager but drinks like a great brown ale.

Vallensons' Brewing Co. Pink

“Very fruit-forward, but refined with restrained sweetness, bright and crisp cherry character, and a subtle underlying nutty note reminiscent of almonds. Moderately dry on the finish, allowing the tartness to linger pleasantly. A light-bodied, complex fruit beer that isn’t overly sweet.”
