Wayfinder Beer Gravity Drop Baltic Porter

What the brewers say

Deliciously rich, elegant, and warming, with notes of chocolate, fig and caramel.

What our panel thought

Barrista-borne aroma—roast malt with nice nuances of coffee, toffee, browned toast, brown sugar. Flavor tones it down—sweet coffee and nutty character enhance the bitter/sweet interaction. Lacks the richer malt spectrum; body is a bit mild. Assertive but pleasant hop-bitterness. Smooth warmth.

What our editors thought

Molasses, burnt caramel, and an almost cinnamon-like spice on the nose. The sip is wide and mouth-filling, but curiously light on the roast. Eschews sharper dark malt for beefy caramel midtones and a hit of cola.

Fonta Flora Brewery Wolf Spit

Complex, intriguing nose: notes of strong, woodsy green tea, tobacco, nutty malt. Almost smoky. Flavor brings another dimension, as stronger hickory brings a green wood touch that pairs well with deep malt—toffee, dates, dark toast, mocha. Wood character obscures the beer’s details. Unique.

Pontoon Brewing Company Battle of the Baltics

“Smooth and restrained roast character in the aroma, with a clean ester profile. The flavor has a touch of rough dark chocolate with a slight pepper-flesh edge. Clean lager character throughout with supporting bitterness that doesn’t distract.”

Burial Beer Co Ulfbehrt Foudre-Aged Baltic Porter

Pleasant but subtle aroma: light roast, licorice, coffee, bitter chocolate, caramel. In the flavor, malt sweetness with chocolate, caramel, nuts; spice notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander. Full body. Nuanced and interesting. Finishes fairly sweet.
