Alaskan Brewing Company White

What the brewers say

“Alaskan White Ale has a soft, slightly sweet base with the unique spice aroma of coriander and crisp, citrus finish of orange peel. A light and effervescent body combined with the smooth palate creates a complex and delicate beer that is refreshing in any season.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong, dominant aromas of coriander, orange, and lemon zest, with the light grain sweetness of wheat.”

Flavor: “Good coriander flavor makes itself known but isn’t overpowering. Some light spicy hops character with a perhaps too-high, lingering bitterness. Assertive carbonic bite but no flaws. Finishes with sweet fruit-juice profile that is crisp and clean and leaves a lemon tartness on the tongue.”

Overall: “A crisp, refreshing beer. Very clean and tasty and profiles sweetness well. Love the finish. Great beer for spring or summer. Good example of wit despite crystal clarity.”

AleSmith Brewing Company Decadence

**Aroma:** “Pleasant, refreshing aroma. Moderate sweet wheat, light vanilla, very light oral hops, touch of cinnamon, big bready, light toasted malt. A mild wheat cereal note, but not much hint at things to come.” **Flavor:** “Honey-like sweetness, moder- ate oral hops, light vanilla, moderate white wheat bready avor, very light eth- anol warmth. Bitterness is suf cient to balance. Caramel notes offer complexity. For the high alcohol and malt sweetness, its refreshingly clean and crisp.” **Overall:** “Both refreshing to the palate and a refreshing take on a strong ale, this wheatwine is as straightforward as it is enjoyable. Well balanced smooth drinking beer. The sweetness of the wheat malt with a light hops bitterness makes this very easy to drink, especially at the alcohol strength. The simplicity of the malt bill really lets the complexity of wheat shine. Well executed and clean.”

**Aroma:** “Very floral aroma with slight caramel notes in front of the wheat. Nice floral coriander notes and slight citrus. Hints of herbs. Almost a banana-like ester.” **Flavor:** “Nice sweetness of honey and citrus orange fruitiness with notes of ly- chee. Slight wheat flavor and light earthy hop character. Earthy pepper notes are present. Sweet, almost banana profile. Nice balance of acidity and carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. No flaws, but almost more like a hefeweizen than a wit.” **Overall:** “Excellent. Great balance. Sweet and refreshing wit with an acidic lactic taste gives a good finish. Very nice profile of yeast characteristics. Very fresh coriander.”

Shiner / Spoetzl Brewery White Wing

**Aroma:** “Strong, perfumey coriander with deep, earthy notes, backed up by a light, sweet wheat aroma.” **Flavor:** “Big coriander notes! Crisp and refreshing with a good carbonic bite. Clear but creamy mouthfeel (almost like Cream of Wheat) with a nice grainy sweetness in the background. Well balanced with some tartness and a crisp, slightly cidery finish.” **Overall:** “Good example of the style except for an odd earthy aroma. But very clean and refreshing. Spices are well balanced with the malt. Refreshing and herbal character is showcased. An easy drinking wit, but if you don’t like coriander, you won’t like this beer!”
