Avery Brewing Company White Rascal

What the brewers say

“A truly authentic Belgian-style wheat or ‘white’ ale, this Rascal is unfiltered (yup, that’s yeast on the bottom) and cleverly spiced with coriander and curaçao orange peel producing a refreshingly zesty classic ale.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Nice citrus fruit character with some spicy notes to add complexity. Light wheat sweetness accompanied by hints of floral coriander and lemon zest.”

Flavor: “Nice sweet lemon citrus, earthy and pepper notes come through with medium malt sweetness. A very faint carbonic twang, but not terribly complex. Spices are subdued. Very nice balance of body and a crisp, refreshing finish.”

Overall: “Refreshing and crisp wit. Nice citrus sweetness is profiled in a beer that is solid, but without too much to differentiate it from the crowd. A great example of the style.”

Coors Brewing Company Blue Moon Belgian White

**Aroma:** “Citrus orange notes come through with spicy pepper and coriander aromas. Malt sweetness in the back. Floral and almost spicy aroma. Slight grain sweetness with hints of lemon zest. Coriander aroma is slightly stale, bordering on artificial.” **Flavor:** “Good balance of acidity and malt background with a creamy mouthfeel. Coriander and some spicy pepper notes. Good balance of citrus orange sweetness with peppery and spicy flavor. A bit too thick and chewy for the style, but nice acidic carbonation.” **Overall:** “A good example of the style, but just a bit too heavy and sweet. Still, a refreshing, complex take on a wit. Spices, tartness, and sweetness carry through. Good balance of citrus and spice.”

Avery Brewing White Rascal (2019)

“The pleasantly complex aromas of spicy phenols, floral hops, and some fun grassy and fruity notes give way to a clean, somewhat bitter, finishing taste with notes of wheat, grass, floral hops, and pepper. A solid summer wit. Banana and bubblegum pop nicely as it warms.”

Off Color Brewing Troublesome

**Aroma:** “Sweet malt, lemon tartness, and warm dirt. Fresh-cut grass and floral, herbal character in the nose. Slight lemon and earthiness, with Belgian yeast spice.” **Flavor:** “Lemon tartness with slight malt wheat sweetness. Some lactic acidity and lemon zest. Round, full body with some background bitterness and slight mineral character. Very creamy. Pleasant graininess in the finish.” **Overall:** “Enjoyable and refreshing, but a little one-dimensional. Sour character is extremely subtle, and flavors taste a little mismatched. Great raw wheat character.”
