Brewery Ommegang Witte

What the brewers say

"Witte, our version of the classic Belgian wit, is brewed with malted and unmal- ted wheat, orange peel, and coriander. It is pale straw in color, slightly hazy, and topped with a white, fluffy head. Hops and spice with a subtle clove note backed by flavors of lemon and sweet orange give way to a dry, crisp finish."

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Very floral aroma with slight caramel notes in front of the wheat. Nice floral coriander notes and slight citrus. Hints of herbs. Almost a banana-like ester.”

Flavor: “Nice sweetness of honey and citrus orange fruitiness with notes of ly- chee. Slight wheat flavor and light earthy hop character. Earthy pepper notes are present. Sweet, almost banana profile. Nice balance of acidity and carbonation. Crisp and refreshing. No flaws, but almost more like a hefeweizen than a wit.”

Overall: “Excellent. Great balance. Sweet and refreshing wit with an acidic lactic taste gives a good finish. Very nice profile of yeast characteristics. Very fresh coriander.”

Brouwerij St. Bernardus Wit (Bière Blanche)

**Aroma:** “Sweet malty aroma with notes of biscuits and wheat. Some nice fruity citrus notes with coriander and floral characteristics. Subtle sour apple and white grape. Hints of black pepper.” **Flavor:** “Light wheat malt sweetness with a slight honey character. Orange and lemon citrus with nice, mild, fresh coriander. Dry, lingering, slightly tangy finish accompanied by good background bitterness.” **Overall:** “An excellent exemplar of the style. Spices are noticeable but not overpowering. Well balanced between bitterness and malt sweetness. A crisp wit beer with fruit, citrus, and orange character. Very refreshing and flawless.”

Brewery Ommegang Gnomegang

**Aroma:** “Tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, and lychee) with bready malt, wheaty spiciness, and a light peppery spice. Floral, honeysuckle aroma. A subtle hint of caramel.” **Flavor:** “Pineapple juice! OMG, it’s the Dole plantation. Not exactly a tripel, but the flavor is intriguing. Tropical fruits dominate, with a little caramel in the background to support it without overdoing it. Tastes like alcoholic fruit cocktail with fun Belgian phenolics (black pepper, clove, hints of leather and tobacco). Very restrained bitterness provides balance.” **Overall:** “Despite the stylistic deviations from tripel, it’s a big, juicy Mai Tai that accidentally ended up in a beer bottle (or can). Those looking for a classic Belgian tripel will be sorely disappointed, but the adventurous will be richly rewarded.”

Anheuser-Busch InBev Shock Top Belgian White

**Aroma:** “Light, malty wheat sweetness accented by barely there coriander and orange. Some light floral and spice notes. Nose is hard to detect, almost absent. More spice than wheat.” **Flavor:** “Malty sweet with some acidity and some coriander. Nice sweet profile of fruity notes, orange, citrus with floral and pepper notes. Medium wheat character and balanced earthy hops flavors. Slight slickness on the tongue. Finish is sweet rather than crisp but has good acidity.” **Overall:** “Tastes carbonated despite no head. A crisp version of a wit. Nice sweetness and easy drinking. This beer could be excellent with a little more crispness and a little residual sweetness.”
