Discover Otherworldly Flavor with Alora™ Primary Image

Alora™, the latest aroma hop from the Hopsteiner Breeding Program, is best known for its unique oil composition, high 3MH thiol precursors, and tantalizing aroma. Key benefits include:

  • More than 50 percent of total oils are selinene—a sesquiterpene rarely found in hops
  • Has five times more bound 3MH thiol precursors than Cascade
  • Offers a low carbon footprint with stacked disease resistance
  • Has an aroma of peach, apricot, yuzu fruit, sweet melon with an alpha range of 7–10%.

Most hop varieties contain fractions of eight commonly found hop oils, generally referred to as the “big 8” oil groups—pinene, myrcene, limonene, linalool, caryophyllene, farnesene, humulene, and geraniol. Like most varieties, Alora™ contains a small amount of each, but what really makes Alora™ jump off the chart is the “unclassified” category. More than 50 percent of the total hop oils in Alora™ are an “unidentified” oil uncommon in hop chemistry. Further analysis reveals the unidentified category to be selinene—a sesquiterpene rarely found in hops. This rare chemical trait found in Alora™ contributes to its unique flavor/aroma composition. Selinene is a low-volatility compound that imparts distinct citrus character directly into finished beer and can be found in fruits such as calamondin oranges and yuzu fruit.

In addition to Alora’s™ unique oil composition is the prominent amount of thiol precursors, or more specifically, bound 3MH thiol precursors. 3MH thiols are noted for their aroma/flavor contribution to finished beer. They are responsible for tropical fruit, passion fruit, and citrusy aroma/flavor. Other hop varieties that contain elevated amounts of 3MH thiol precursors are Cascade and Calypso™; however, not all hop varieties that contain 3MH precursors are necessarily equal. For instance, the amount of 3MH is an important distinction: Alora™ contains 5 times more 3MH precursor thiols than Cascade (amount may vary from crop year to crop year).

Along with Alora’s™ distinct oil and thiol profile, it is also one of the most carbon-footprint-friendly hops grown to date largely because of its genetic makeup. Alora™ was bred using genetic markers, resulting in stacked disease resistance. What this means is that Alora™ has multiple layers of durable plant host protection from mildews, ultimately reducing the need for chemical fungicide applications commonly required.

The name Alora™ comes from Latin and means “beautiful dream, dreamlike, or divine light.” As Harriet Tubman said, every great dream begins with a dreamer … or in this case, a brewer, and we’re sure you’ll craft the beer of your dreams with this out-of-this-world hop.
