Happy (Beer) Ice Cream Month

“Beer is great, but if you can have ice cream too, that’s even better,” says Bill Covaleski, the president and brewmaster at Downington, Pennsylvania’s Victory Brewing Company.

After fourteen years of developing house-made, beer-infused ice cream at Victory’s in-house restaurant, the brewery debuted the Victory Ice Cream line at the beginning of July, national ice cream month.

There are three Victory Ice Cream flavors. The Triple Monkey is banana ice cream made with the wort from Victory’s Belgian-style tripel, Golden Monkey, swirled with pecans. The Hopped-Up Devil is cayenne and cinnamon ice cream made with HopDevil IPA wort studded with crushed coffee beans and flaked chocolate. The Storm Drop is chocolate ice cream made with the wort from Storm King Imperial Stout and deep chocolate drops.

Like Victory Brewing, Penobscot Bay Brewery in Winterport, Maine, is skipping the beer floats and putting beer directly into fresh ice cream, too. Available at the brewery are pints of chocolate-swirled ice cream flavored with the Penobscot Bay Brewery Half Moon Stout.

In an article on craftbeer.com, Lisa Morrison rounds up ice cream companies that are making beer-infused ice cream with selections from local breweries. On the list is Sweet Action Ice Cream in Denver. They make Coffee Yeti Stout, Chocolate Yeti Butterscotch, Chocolate Yeti Boysenberry Swirl, and Chocolate Yeti Butterfinger with Great Divide Brewing Co.’s Yeti Imperial Stout. In Portland, Oregon, Salt & Straw made its first beer ice cream out of Laurelwood Brewing Company’s Hooligan Brown Ale; and in Atlanta, Frozen Pints is making ice creams named after the craft beers with which they are flavored: Peach Lambic, Honey IPA, and Vanilla Bock to name a few. In Morrison's article, you'll also find tips for perfecting homemade craft beer ice cream and beer ice cream recipes.

Even more ice cream shops are collaborating with craft breweries, Lucy Burningham reported on nytimes.com last summer. She cited Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, which makes the Yazoo Sue with Rosemary Bar Nuts ice cream with cherry wood-smoked porter from Nashville, Tennessee’s Yazoo Brewing Company; and Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream in San Francisco, which makes a line of beer ice creams for San Francisco Beer Week.
