What it is: Opened in 2006, the Alibi Room is a foundation stone of the craft-beer movement in British Columbia. Probably the first bar in Vancouver to offer a range of interesting imports and local beer options, the Alibi has since maintained its place in B.C.’s beer scene as a cozy evening hangout that offers a thoughtfully curated, ever-changing list of local beer alongside a menu of locally and ethically sourced comfort food.
Why it’s great: The Alibi Room hasn’t changed all that much over the years—and that’s just fine. Housed in a century-old building at the eastern edge of Vancouver’s lively Gastown neighborhood, the airy Alibi exudes effortless cool with exposed brick, smatterings of wall art, and tall windows that provide a view of the port and the Coast Mountains beyond. Trains trundling past give a sense of the world easing by while you nibble on skinny fries, charcuterie, or the signature burger and consider your options from the 50-tap list. The Alibi was pivotal in nourishing B.C.’s nascent beer scene, and it still devotes taps to lesser-known breweries from around the province. There’s always something homey about returning here: the knowledge that you’ll get a warm welcome, a good feed, and something interesting in your glass.
