Saint Arnold Brewing Company 5 O’Clock Pils

What the brewers say

“The Pils malt is light yet with a pleasant bready character. Saaz hops gives a pleasant earthy spiciness. The final, unfiltered beer has a light maltiness, a big refreshing bitter and wonderful, delicate hops flavor and aroma.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Low fruity esters of citrus and peach, with some floral and spicy hops notes as it opens up. Some background sulfur and mineral notes, with slight biscuit and a malt sweetness that sits in the back.”

Flavor: “The malt sweetness surprises on the taste and carries through to the finish. Biscuit and honey-like sweetness up front with some peach esters throughout and complementary orange and lemon. The hops provide a nice complexity of spice and earthy character, and the carbonation finishes clean and dry.”

Overall: “A curious beer with some unique flavors. Leans more malty, but still light and refreshing. The aroma is less hoppy than expected, with the mineral notes. Despite the generous head, the carbonation level seems a touch less lively than desired. The lingering hops bitterness is refreshing, makes me want another sip.”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Nooner Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Light fruity esters, with a touch of Pilsner malt, but very low aroma overall. Some sweet breadiness and light citrus, with a mild floral spice. Lemon and pepper, with some biscuit underneath that’s very delicate.” **Flavor:** “The front hits with some bready biscuit malt sweetness, as well as some cracker. Light, fruity citrus notes, with some pear, watermelon, and spice character. The hops are floral and spicy, which balances the malt sweetness. The bitterness is a bit bigger than the malt and hops flavors, but the beer is smooth, with a creamy mouthful.” **Overall:** “Dry and light, with a bitterness up front that’s not too overwhelming, followed by the sweetness of the malt in the middle, and a creamy sweetness. Clean and refreshing.”

Saint Arnold Brewing Company Summer Pils

**Aroma:** “The floral hops character hits in the front, and malt bread-like sweetness sits in the back of nose. The Pilsner sulfur character dominates, and it’s almost minerally in that respect. Flowery hops character is medium-low, woody, and spicy, and blends in throughout.” **Flavor:** “Light-bodied but balanced well and slightly creamy. The hops are not overly bitter but provide some nice spice to break up the malt biscuit sweetness. Very clean and dry finish.” **Overall:** “Refreshing Pilsner with a nice balance that’s very enjoyable and drinkable. With the crisp hops flavors and light citrus tartness in the background, it makes me want to take another sip.”

Wiley Roots Brewing Co Beer Flavored Beer

“Brilliant golden in color with large bubbles in a lingering white head. Fresh doughy malt aroma, light herbal hops. Clean bready malt, sweet grain, just a hint of earthy hops and an off dry finish. The sweetness overpowers the balance, leaving one wanting a little more hop bitterness to help. A very refreshing example. No flaws are detected and the finish is clean and brite. This is clean, refreshing and pleasant, but it is begging for a touch more hop balance, particularly in bitterness.”
