AleSmith Brewing Co Speedway Stout: Toasted Coconut Vietnamese Coffee Edition

What the brewers say

“Expect deep dark chocolate, nutty coconut, and a coffee-forward finish.”

What our panel thought

“All the things you want: massive roast character, layered dark-fruit malt sweetness, distinct and integrated additions, boozy finish. Toasted coconut notes blend with chocolate, coffee, and hints of vanilla. It’s huge, but pleasant and warming from start to finish.”

What our editors thought

“Deep chocolate and toasted coconut aroma, rich and reserved. Dark yet smooth in the sip, with an unrepentant rounded bitterness that neatly controls the sweeter top notes.”

AleSmith Brewing Co Speedway Stout Variant #2: Mostra Coffee & Coconut

“Black pour with ruby highlights and a firm tan head. Reserved coffee-forward nose with some lingering dark fruit notes. Soft and pillow-top malt profile with notes of berry-forward coffee, light coconut, and chocolate. Coffee-like bitterness throughout the sip. Sweet and roasty finish with soft coconut notes.”

AleSmith Brewing Co Speedway Stout: German Chocolate Cake Edition

“Coffee, vanilla, cinnamon spice in the aroma. Burnt dark chocolate, coffee, and coconut in the flavor with subtle cherry and grape. Assertive alcohol warmth. Very chewy. Sweet, but the coffee and bitter chocolate really balance it.”

AleSmith Brewing Company Speedway Stout (Vietnamese Coffee)

**Aroma:** “Starts out solventy and inky but fades into a fairly muted blend of coffee, chocolate, and roast. Some dark plum and dark fruit, with a moderate British hops aroma and vanilla.” **Flavor:** “Notes of soy sauce and solvent. The beauty of this beer is the lack of things sticking out—the base has some nice roast and chocolate character that are complemented by the dark roast coffee. Sherry, cinnamon, and dark fruits appear as well, with some floral hops in the background.” **Overall:** “This is a fun beer if you can get past the oxidation and solvent/high alcohol character. It’s a solid coffee imperial stout that fits together well with the nice rich chocolate and coffee flavors.”
