American Solera Rum BA Pineapple Orange Lime

What the brewers say

“Hard seltzer aged in rum barrels with pineapple, orange, lime.”

What our panel thought

“So outrageous that it actually works. Nose is a blend of pineapple, orange candy, rum. The fruit adds body and a thicker mouthfeel. The seltzer adds liveliness on the tongue. Rum is balanced, contributes a cocktail-like impression, and keeps this from being just boozy fruit juice.”

What our editors thought

“Strong rum notes in the aroma suggest serious tiki cocktail vibes. Exuberant in the sip, with brilliant pineapple and just a touch of balancing citrus. Definitely sweet, but it’s not distracting.”

Burial Beer Co Everything Dies Barrel-Aged Sour Ale with Pineapple Skin, Orange Zest, Lime Zest, Allspice, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, and Ginger.

A punch of sweet basil, cardamom, orange peel, ginger, allspice, cinnamon, and star anise on the nose. Less herbal character in the flavor, and more pineapple with some lemongrass. The spice notes work with the sourness, each aspect drawing out something from the other.

Cruz Blanca Brewery Pineapple + Lime Chelada

“In the aroma, notes of coconut, lime, and pineapple with an acidic tartness to balance. The flavor is lime and a hint of pineapple with a coconut creaminess. Pineapple sourness, then more of a candied-pineapple finish.”

Epic Brewing Sour Brainless on Pineapple

__Aroma:__ “Subtle pineapple up front that adds to the sense of big esters when you dig deep. Moderate barnyard *Brett* funk that tastes young and earthy with some floral qualities. Spicy phenols. Graham-cracker malt, and acetic/ethyl acetate.” __Flavor:__ “Much more pronounced pineapple here, so vivid that I can almost feel the texture of the pineapple meat. Flickers of artificial pineapple candy kick in, along with some tartness that’s more from the fruit than the fermentation. The sweetness from the fruit almost overwhelms the sourness of the base beer. The mild *Brett* funk shines through once the sweetness subsides.” __Overall:__ “There’s a lot of perceived sweetness, but the finish is actually quite dry. Acetic and ethyl acetate balance the perceived sweetness. Notable white-wine character and a very intense pineapple experience. Just a bit rough.”
