Burial Beer Fall of the Damned (2019)

What the brewers say

"Aged in steel with marionberries and blackberries, then bottle conditioned. The final expression is sticky blackberry, jammy raspberry, and pie-spiced Beaujolais."

What our panel thought

"Fresh blackberry/raspberry dominates aroma. Jammy. Light balanced acidity. Notes of Brett leather, wood, and raspberry seed. Deep ruby, lightly hazy pour with very good retention. Flavor is acidic up front, well-balanced. Just a touch of wheaty dough and bread. Fruit complexity very good and generally blends with the acid well, though it does tend to dominate the beer overall. Finish is dry and very tart but clears off the palate relatively quickly."

What our editors thought

"Big jammy berry notes in the nose—bold leather, burnt bread crust. In the flavor—lightly tannic wood/berry note, restrained acidity, round rich berry, toasty malt—a heady mix of malt and berry that borders on red wine."

Bard's Tale Beer Company Bard's Gold

**Aroma:** “Candy aromas dominate, rem- iniscent of Sweet Tarts and Smarties. Very low spicy hops with an intriguing spice aroma. Cooked honey and a white-grape-like sweetness with a little sharpness.” **Flavor:** “Mostly grain sweetness up front, almost candy-like, followed by a medium level of hops bitterness with a dry, sharp, highly carbonated, mostly balanced finish. Very subtle earthy spiced hops note. Nice tartness. The beer has a dry wine character with some fruity sweetness.” **Overall:** “This beer provides some sweet flavors with a dry finish. There’s a bit of candy-like sweetness, perhaps from the gluten-free malts. Wine-like and high in carbonation, this beer could use more hops aromatics to make it more beer-like; tastes like a lightly hopped rice beer.”

Reuben’s Brews Brettania: Raspberry

Hazy, deep-salmon pour; great head retention. Blackberry, raspberry dominate nose; notes of seeds, herbs, Brett-driven spice and leather. Solid sweetness from the fruit, with a sour, balanced backnote. Light minerality, light raspberry smokiness. Touch of leathery funk for balance. Finishes off-dry, clean, light.

Burial Beer Co Too Much To Bear Cuvee of Cognac, Bourbon, and Calvados Barrel-Aged Strong Ales

“Dark fruit, light caramel, and whiskey in the nose. Burnt toast and bitter dark malts lead into a sweet, deep butterscotch finish. Huge chocolate and roast notes, stone fruit mixed with subtle leather.”
