The Ale Apothecary El Cuatro

What the brewers say

"El Cuatro with cherries, aged in a port barrel."

What our panel thought

"Aroma: moderate acidity, bright cherry, and light blueberry. Mild vanilla note. Flavor: cherry, forward acidity, low notes of cherry skin and wood tannin. Mild leathery Brett. Port grape-like notes carry in the dry finish."

What our editors thought

"Strong wood and rich grape nose with a tanned-leather and orange-peel note. Rich toasty malt fills out the center, and a curious sharp sweet acid lingers into the finish. Dessert-sour territory."

Creature Comforts Yonah Skins

Spritzy and rosé-like. Aroma is bright, and the subtle grape character plays well off the light funk. Sweet grape, wildflower honey, medium-low acid, earthiness. Grape character is well integrated and balances the acidity.

Brouwerij Hof Ten Dormaal Saison

**Aroma:** “Moderate lemon notes with a touch of lime. Light spicy notes, but more muted than other examples. Light tart note, could have a slight Brett note. Fantastic aroma that really shines—orange and fresh-baked bread.” **Flavor:** “Tart notes up front with big grapefruit and lime notes. I would guess Brett in this beer because of that. Moderate spiciness toward the end of the sip that could be considered harsh, but then a big grapefruit flavor comes in to finish it off. Overall malt sweetness is low. Balanced toward yeast characteristics and hops flavor. Very refreshing. Extremely dry, but in a drinkable way.” **Overall:** “Very fruity and refreshing beer. Had there been a little more balance toward the malt, it would have scored even higher. Very dry with a touch of carbonic bite. Very acidic for a saison—it’s refreshing but fairly intense for what I would expect.”

Casey Brewing & Blending Casey Family Preserves: Raspberry

Ruby-red hue. Aroma oozes raspberry. Flavor delivers a punch of tart, fresh fruit, amplified by lingering acidity. Not much else, and that’s OK. I suspect the brewer told the finance team to fuck off on this one, throwing in all the raspberries they had.
