Hop Butcher For the World Lincoln Anniversary Stout

What the brewers say

“Bourbon barrel–aged imperial stout.”

What our panel thought

“Massive, rich, sweet, and boozy. Sweet malt, soy sauce, and whiskey aromas, with some vanilla and oak. Flavor is sweet malt, alcohol, whiskey. Hop bitterness prevents this from being pancake syrup. Kahlúa-filled chocolate candy, which is quite nice in small doses.”

What our editors thought

“Dark chocolate and damp forest floor aroma with burnt caramel edges. Sweeter chocolate in the sip, with latte-like smooth and creamy roast bitterness.”

River North Brewery Anniversary 11 Stout

Rich, melting, fondue dark chocolate. Smells of deep oak, vanilla, and chocolate covered dark fruits with hints of tobacco.A slight booziness in the aroma that comes in much stronger in the flavor. Rich, oaky and resplendent. Oak and alcohol flavors are predominant, but allow for chocolate covered raisins to follow through and a slight cherry impression adds depth. Lots of vanilla oozing from the thick, dark mysteries. A spicy mouthfeel appears midway through the finish. Definitely strong, but its surprising momentum eases away after a few sips, and then you're fully in its grasp.

Hop Butcher For the World Fat Bear

“Rich nose pushes heavy-handed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, chocolate, graham cracker, marshmallow. Sugary decadence in the flavor with layered chocolate peanut butter that finishes sweeter than sweet but hides the heat. Thick body coats the mouth.”

pFriem Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout (2017)

Aroma: “Boozy roast chocolate notes with a hint of soy sauce.” Flavor: “Rich and chewy chocolate, caramel, and roast character with a bitter finish. Nice tannic spicy character on the swallow, with mellow alcohol warming quality. The bitterness masks some of the more delicate malt sweetness overall.” Overall: “Rich and complex, a great combination of a well-made imperial stout and barrel qualities that pair well with the underlying beer. The finish is bitter from the roast, maybe bordering on harsh, but it works well with this beer.”
