Odell Brewing Company Jolly Russian

What the brewers say

“Jolly Russian is a rich Russian imperial stout stowed away in rum barrels for aging. Dark as night and thick as the raging sea, this brew boasts notes of coffee and cocoa with waves of oak, spiced molasses, dried fruit, and vanilla from the planks.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Rich roast and chocolate up front, with a light smokiness and a touch of malt sweetness. There’s a light dark- fruit/date note, with cherry, dark fig, and vanilla. The sugar sweetness and smoke reminds me of candied bacon.”

Flavor: “Chocolate and roast add complexity up front, with a light alcohol warming toward the finish. Notes of rum, but also a note of tequila. The oak quality of the barrel is evident. Flashes of cocoa and vanilla weave through dark fruits of fig, plum, prune, and raisin. Intense flavors, but no single flavor dominated.”

Overall: “This beer is hot and boozy, with a rum presence that’s really just complexity and heat. Could use some aging to let the alcohol mellow out and the flavors shine through. A beautifully rich and complex beer that takes a minute to wrap your head around, but once you’re into it, you don’t want to leave.”

New Realm Brewing Wooded Reserve Series: Doomsday Hound Russian Imperial Stout aged in Templeton Rye Barrels

“A smoky nose with a wisp of brown sugar. Rich dark chocolate with small doses of cacao and mild roast. Complex base stout with imaginative wood aromatics. Big in nature but not unapproachable.”

Fort George Brewery Matryoshka

Baker’s chocolate and cinnamon aroma with a touch of leathery sherry. Taste is classic American imperial stout. Well-rounded edges. Roast, barrel, residual sugars are all in balance. Dried dates, dark chocolate, dry espresso, touch of toasted coconut. A really good example of a classic barrel-aged stout.

Highland Brewing Company Black Watch Double Chocolate Milk Stout

__Aroma:__ “Super chocolate presence—sweet, bitter, and dark—on the nose, with some evident roast malt, but it’s very faint. The malt is roasty, but has a slight buttery pie crust character and sits in the back. This beer smells like a chocolate bar.” __Flavor:__ “The initial flavor comes across as a very fine dark chocolate, with some level of nuttiness from pecans. Some creamy sweetness cuts through the dark chocolate and roast, lending some complexity. It’s very rich with the cocoa and deep-roasted coffee notes, and the creaminess lifts the flavor. There are also some notes of plums and cherries. The toasted malts carry through the finish, providing medium-full body and lasting sweetness.” __Overall:__ “The chocolate really dominates, and it’s somewhat difficult to pick out other nuanced flavor profiles. It makes for incredibly smooth drinking—it’s rich, sweet, and decadent. The body does a good job of holding up the chocolate, and it’s one of the better examples I’ve had in a stout.”
