What our panel thought

“Sweet, rich aroma of coffee, cherry, plum, chocolate, dragon fruit. Low floral alcohol. Strong malt flavor of coffee, chocolate, and toast. Finish slightly sweet. A refreshing counter-example to the overly complex, sweet, adjunct-laden stouts of the day, this is an exceedingly well-made throwback. Big. Roasty. Creamy. Nothing fancy, but beautifully balanced and rich. Complexity for days without harsh edges. Yes, please.”

What our editors thought

“Beautiful nose with pungent dark malt, smooth roast, and a fragrant licorice/anise element. On the tongue, it’s smooth and deliberate, as rounded roasty notes play against layers of caramel. A light hop bitterness offers a structured through line and keeps it from becoming too sweet.”
