2nd Shift Brewing Sunny Cat

What the brewers say

"Brewed in honor and memory of our Sunshine Kitty. Brewed with oats, lactose, Amarillo, and Citra hops, and dried tangerine peel."

What our panel thought

"Delicate, tart citrus notes don’t make you guess—zesty aromatherapy. Tangerine peels stand apart from the crowd, working well with piney hops and bitterness. Light-bodied, slightly low carb, but full of citrus flavor. Base beer supports the heavy zest without distracting, and the bitterness balances the residual malt sweetness very well. The finish is like good marmalade—a mixture of sweetness and bitterness, with complex citrus-zest flavors."

What our editors thought

"Lightly fruity nose doesn’t clearly define where the citrus addition stops and hops begin—enticing interplay, sophisticated, with touches of citrus oil and grass beneath overt fruit. The sip is softer—moderately low sweetness, with a bitterness that could be all fruit if we didn’t know it was hops. That citrus-oil bitterness persists into the finish, with an earthy linger."

Dankhouse Feelin' Berry Good

“Jammy, inviting aromas of fresh raspberry and blackberry are pie filling–like. No subtle notes here. Blackberry dominates with the raspberry bringing up the rear. The tartness and fresh flavors of the berries are well integrated into the light acidity of the base beer. The flavors are as fresh as the aroma. Beautiful in appearance, aroma, and flavor. Thick hazy purple hue sucks you in and brings you back for more: incredibly drinkable.”

Decadent Creamery Blackberry Sorbet Gose

“Dark pink pour with an off-pink head. Tart, fresh aroma—ripe blackberries atop blackberry jam with a doughy malt backbone. The fruit overshadows the base beer but delivers on a full flavor explosion. Sweet fruit finish with a touch of astringency and nice level of acidity. Balanced, yet leaning sweet. Simple and well-made.”

Cerebral Brewing Muscle Memory

Pleasant dank-hop aroma—reefer and pine—with a wisp of biscuit-like malt. Balanced flavor, softening the dankness with a hint of shallot, with mild malt layered beneath for a touch of sweetness. Soft bitter finish. Solid, drinkable pale ale.
