Firestone Walker Brewing Co Primal Elements

What the brewers say

“Pineapple, mango, and tangerine sour ale ripened in oak barrels.”

What our panel thought

“Tropical fruit–punch notes jump out of the glass, giving the impression of nectar-like richness. The nose is tropical and inviting, almost like a fruit smoothie. Fruit-punch notes carry through into the flavor, but the nectary sweetness is tempered by a healthy dose of tart acidity with each flavor element deftly complementing the other. Incredibly smooth for a sour beer and drinks almost like a delicious beverage found at a beach-juice shack. Perfect balance of all the elements.”

What our editors thought

“Tropical cocktail nose with punchy pineapple, warming earthy mango, and a burst of higher-key citrus—juicy without reservations. The sip is equally gorgeous and far less sweet than expected, with beautifully structured acidity and bitterness that provide the perfect support for fruit top notes. It trades away some ‘beer’ flavor in favor of the tropical excess, but you won’t miss it.”

Bend Brewing Co Killer Stashe: Amarillo

Bready malt buoys a mild wash of herbal hops in the nose—a touch of pine, a tad dank, with citrus background. In the flavor, bread crust and a hint of sweetness carry the beer to dryness. The herbal hop character expands with some spicy notes and a fruity ester. Refreshing, approachable. Exemplary. I could have one of these every day.

Black Lung Brewing Company Haunted Hurst

“Bright, fruity tropical notes in the nose of guava, mango, orange, pineapple are balanced by hints of pine, onion, and cedar. Carries all the way through the flavor. Firm bitterness. Balanced between tropical fruit and earthy notes, all within a soft malty body.”

Lawson's Finest Liquids Above the Clouds

Aroma: “Assertive orange, grapefruit, and lemon hops. Slightly piney and earthy. Hints of lemongrass, green pepper, and green onion with a background of herbal tea and mint. There’s a touch of bready malt behind the hops.” Flavor: “There’s a lot of hops complexity. Bold citrus with a lemongrass focus. Malt flavors get lost in the shuffle. Light, clean body. Bitter and dry finish with a lingering hops-derived bitterness.” Overall: “More akin to a light-bodied session IPA/dry-hopped pale ale than a golden ale. Still, pleasantly assertive hops aromatics with a bold, hops-forward flavor in a super-light, clean ale. A unique dichotomy of styles.”
