Smuttynose Brewing Company Hayseed

What the brewers say

“Hayseed is a delicious sessionable farmhouse ale, also known as a grisette. Light-bodied, yet flavorful, Hayseed is like liquid sunshine: perfect after a hike, floating in the lake, or while playing fetch with your old brown dog.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Strong hint of the Belgian yeast characters with clove and banana, and medium-low passion fruit and peach esters. A light bready, apple, and citrus aroma, with woody phenols of cedar and pine that carry throughout.

Flavor: “Bready and malty, with a grainy flavor. Peppery, woody, piney flavor that lingers. A light peach, cherry, and tangerine sweetness that finishes tart, light, and dry. Moderate carbonation, and light-bodied.”

Overall: “Malt comes through effectively with a lot of fruity esters and spicy phenols. Quite bready, with peach notes that provide a good balance to the earthy flavors and aroma. The citrus notes were enjoyable, and this beer had some good complexity.”

Seventh Son Brewing Co Stone Fort

Nose of rich toast, caramel, and touch earth and red berry. The flavor gets more distinctly malty, with rich caramel, toasted bread, light smoke; spicy bitterness is nicely balance. Finish is crisp but with just enough sweetness.

12 West Brewing Company Billet

Aroma of piney-orange hops with some spicy notes; light caramel and toast. Fresh, woody hop flavor, with medium-low bitterness that lets malt flavors shine: pleasant bready sweetness, lightly toasted, lingering pleasantly. Smooth and malty.

Stillwater Artisinal Ales Cellar Door

**Aroma:** “Big sage, pine, camphor, lemon, and mint with some fruity esters. Medium citrus aroma of grapefruit and orange with some light pear.” **Flavor:** “Sage comes through strong with a slight medicinal lemon spice behind it. Moderately sweet then slowly fades into a sweet and bitter finish. Herbal notes really shine in this beer. Carbonation is low and balances the herbal and malt sweetness well. Dry and crisp. Finishes clean yet hoppy.” **Overall:** “Sage comes through nicely with some lemon and spicy components. The sweetness and low carb keep it from being quite as refreshing as it could be, but that sweetness also helped balance the herbal sage character. A bit heavy in the finish and has a fair amount of bitterness. A great juxtaposition between herbal notes and fruity hops characteristics.”
