Squatters Hop Rising Tropical DIPA

What the brewers say

"Our much-loved double IPA tests the tropical waters with notes of mango and citrus derived entirely from exotic hops."

What our panel thought

"Pleasant nose: candied citrus peel, lemon pith, floral notes. Tropical candied-fruit flavor, orange-juicy, a bit tangy, on a sweet caramel bed; gentle bitterness takes a back seat. Leans sweet in the finish, zest lingering. Finds some balance in citrus tang and soft cocktail warmth. Delicious. Perilous."

What our editors thought

"Familiar if unremarkable corn-like sweetness on the nose; light tropical notes. Gives way to a body that takes tropical flavor (guava, passion fruit) to 11."

Station 26 Bang Bang Double IPA

Nose of orange, pineapple, and honey; hints of zest and sweet tomato. Nondescript malt sweetness powers juicy-dank hop flavors—citrus and pine—intertwining and flirting with medium-high bitterness through a long, warming finish. Bright, sweet, juicy sort of hop wine.

Alvarado Street Brewery Riwaka, Baby!

“Muted aroma with slight fruity hop notes and a low counterpoint of toasty malt. Flavor has a slight cinnamon note on top of the medium citrus and a malt presence that provides balance. Nice roundness to the mouthfeel. Medium bitterness.”

The Hop Concept Tropical & Juicy

**Aroma:** “Well-blended citrus and tropical fruit, orange/lemon/pineapple. Pine character is strong in the nose. Well-balanced between light toasty malt and piney hops. Light esters. Some grassiness.” **Flavor:** “Grapefruit juice notes and some orange. Sweet but not too sweet. Some bitterness and grapefruit through the finish with slight warmth. Strong toasted character with orange/lemon/pineapple esters. Intensely bitter throughout with a long nish. Rich pine with woody undertones and some lemon and orange. The bitterness is well executed with no harsh edges. Nice body, too.” **Overall:** “The blend of sweetness to hops flavor and bitterness works well. An intensely bitter DIPA with strong character, a nice nose and flavor, and well-balanced.”
