Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa Vanilla Rye

What the brewers say

"Blended from Cuppa aged exclusively in Peerless Rye Whiskey barrels for 12 months. Conditioned on Metric coffee, and 3 varieties of vanilla beans: Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesian."

What our panel thought

“Pleasant aroma, with boozy espresso, dark chocolate, and vanilla setting the stage for a spicy black-pepper note and hint of whiskey. The sip is smooth, with a spicy whiskey component, as rounded chocolate, coffee, and vanilla interplay jovially in the background. The rye brings interesting complexity while helping to balance the sweetness of this massive beer. Finishes with smooth and clean spicy black pepper and alcohol notes. Well-balanced with no rough edges.”

What our editors thought

"Bold and confident rich whiskey nose with multifaceted vanilla “Rich, bold, confident whiskey nose with multifaceted vanilla layers. The sip cleverly wraps moderate sweetness in thick body for a decadent tongue-coating sip that isn’t trying to prove anything. Subtle richness and exquisite heft.”

Perennial Artisan Ales Maman 2018

Lucious notes of chocolate and bourbon jump out instantly on the aroma, which flows perfectly into a chewy-bodied stout full of smooth chocolate bourbon cake. The base beer holds up excellently against the aging and blends the barrel character in expertly. Delicate spices dance over waves of sheeting chocolate while riding the line of overtly sweet. Finishes out fairly dry.

Maplewood Brewing Company Barrel Aged Cuppa Hazelnut

“Intoxicating Mounds bar nose. Robust chocolate flavor, with nuts, creamy coffee, maple syrup, and soft-serve chocolate ice cream. Big, thick mouthfeel and a nice dollop of booze. Sizable bittering helps balance hefty sweetness.”

Other Half Bourbon Barrel Aged Pastrytown VIP

Aroma is toasted marshmallows dipped in bourbon-spiked hot chocolate with perhaps a touch of oatmeal-raisin cookies. Taste is essentially identical. The finish is creamy and smooth. This beer hits the marshmallow notes in a way that most people only hope to. Barrel is present, adding notes of toasted coconut, cinnamon, and clove.
