Prost Brewing Company Pils

What the brewers say

“Prost Pils is pale gold in color and capped with a thick, brilliantly white, dense collar of foam. With the first sip, spicy hops flavors come to the forefront. As the hop begins to fade, the wonderfully soft imported Pilsner malt is revealed.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “A light earthy, grassy, piney, and spicy hops profile, with a touch of honey and moderate skunkiness and sulfur. Some sweet cracker, grain, and a little floral add some complexity to the nose.”

Flavor: “Bitter and skunky notes up front that continue to grow well after the taste is over. The hops bitterness holds some pine and earthiness, as well as some floral tones, that carry through. Biscuit sweetness emerges toward the back, but is hidden by the strong hops.”

Overall: “Although the malt hits at first, the piney and earthy characters of the hops are what linger. Enjoyable for those who like more bitter beers, but might be seen as off-balance.”

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Nooner Pilsner

**Aroma:** “Light fruity esters, with a touch of Pilsner malt, but very low aroma overall. Some sweet breadiness and light citrus, with a mild floral spice. Lemon and pepper, with some biscuit underneath that’s very delicate.” **Flavor:** “The front hits with some bready biscuit malt sweetness, as well as some cracker. Light, fruity citrus notes, with some pear, watermelon, and spice character. The hops are floral and spicy, which balances the malt sweetness. The bitterness is a bit bigger than the malt and hops flavors, but the beer is smooth, with a creamy mouthful.” **Overall:** “Dry and light, with a bitterness up front that’s not too overwhelming, followed by the sweetness of the malt in the middle, and a creamy sweetness. Clean and refreshing.”

Saint Arnold Brewing Company 5 O’Clock Pils

**Aroma:** “Low fruity esters of citrus and peach, with some floral and spicy hops notes as it opens up. Some background sulfur and mineral notes, with slight biscuit and a malt sweetness that sits in the back.” **Flavor:** “The malt sweetness surprises on the taste and carries through to the finish. Biscuit and honey-like sweetness up front with some peach esters throughout and complementary orange and lemon. The hops provide a nice complexity of spice and earthy character, and the carbonation finishes clean and dry.” **Overall:** “A curious beer with some unique flavors. Leans more malty, but still light and refreshing. The aroma is less hoppy than expected, with the mineral notes. Despite the generous head, the carbonation level seems a touch less lively than desired. The lingering hops bitterness is refreshing, makes me want another sip.”

Prost Dunkel

Aroma: “Toasty and nutty with hints of raisin. Very pleasant and inviting.” Flavor: “Medium toast, light caramel sweetness. Subtle minty hops flavor. Balance tips mostly to malt with toffee and raisin. The finish is caramel- focused and dry, with a bit of toasted walnut astringency.” Overall: “Pleasant chewiness and tons of malt aroma. Good malt complexity that has subtle hints of dried fruit without being overpowering. The overall dryness keeps the malt in check. Very solid. Hits the style on the nose.”
