TRVE Brewing Company Stout O)))

What the brewers say

One of our original recipes. A classic American-style stout: dry and robust with enough dry hopping to be crisp, but not hoppy.

What our panel thought

Hints of smoke mingle with the roast-malt aroma along with hops notes of pine and earthy dankness. The smoke character carries through and increases slightly in the flavor. Coupled with a bit of pine hops bitterness and slight minerality, it creates the impression of thinness. Finishes dry and mildly bitter, but not harsh.

What our editors thought

A whiff of campfire and charred oak subtly weave through the nose, while the sip shocks with the sharp bite of bitter hops and tannic malt before quickly fading.

Lakefront Brewery Inc My Turn Series: AL American Stout

“Solid head that retains well. Light on the roast character on the nose. Medium coffee and chocolate malt flavor. Pleasant toast, nutty malt character in the middle with a softly fruity (pear, cherry) underlying sweetness. A brown beer flirting with some stout tendencies?”

Single Hill Brewing Company Reserve - Osa Major

“Alcoholic heat in the nose obscures hints of roasted malt, chocolate, and caramel. Booze carries into the flavor, stripping away more subtle complexities. Roasty, smoky, with pleasantly malty profile.”

Upslope Brewing Company Oatmeal Stout

**Aroma:** “Rich complex roast. Very low ester profile. Notes of coffee, some chocolate, dry cocoa sweetness. Toasty malt with a hint of caramel. As it warms, more chocolate and and some dark roasted roast.” **Flavor:** “Medium sweet with slightly tart finish. Sharp chocolate up front with a rich roastiness that takes over quickly after. Characteristic silkiness of oatmeal stout. Medium smoke note that extends into the aftertaste. A sharp bitterness from the roast character reminds me of an iced coffee. Some nutty notes, some dry chocolate sweetness and bitterness. Thin bodied. Earthy hops come through near the end as well as dark roasted malt. Finish is quite dry.” **Overall:** “Rich and complex, yet easy drinking. Very dry. Malt is simple but works well, and the slight earthy hops are good. A high roast creates an astringency and almost a bitterness. Medium smoke note that also contributes to the astringency. This beer had some nice roast qualities, but the roast itself seemed to dominate the flavor. Somewhat thin for an oatmeal stout.”
