Sun King Brewing Midnight Choir

What the brewers say

Dark sour ale with tart flavors of raspberry and cherry, balanced with a full body and finish.

What our panel thought

Intriguing aroma: herbal remedy, rose water, treacle, anise, raspberry, low dark fruit. Rich but tart, with the fruit somehow finding resonance in that oily residual malt. A touch astringent, with chamomile-like woody-herbal notes. Fairly full-bodied. Strange, compelling balance between acidity and heft.

What our editors thought

Imposing, nearly opaque body opens in the nose with toasted bread, apple, caramel, vanilla, oak. The sip captures these with a bitter touch—curious, slightly sweet, but rich, bitter, and captivating like a dark chocolate truffle.

Sun King Brewing Party Energy

Delicate aroma: rose hips, stone fruit, apricot, pureed pear. Lively, prickly sip—chalky-tart then sweet and bitter—tasting of peach, apricot. Bitterness seems spiky and out of place, with acid a touch out of balance. Warming, medicinal impression in finish. Pithy citrus lingers. Crisp, tart, dry.

Black Lung Brewing Company Haunted Hurst

“Bright, fruity tropical notes in the nose of guava, mango, orange, pineapple are balanced by hints of pine, onion, and cedar. Carries all the way through the flavor. Firm bitterness. Balanced between tropical fruit and earthy notes, all within a soft malty body.”

pFriem Family Brewers Extra Pale

“Dank and terpene-soaked, the hop character is buoyed by clean malt and a mild floral ester. The first impression is that the beer needs to be more bitter, but the slow build of the bitter finish convinces you soon enough.”
