Societe Brewing Company The Pupil IPA

What the brewers say

“The Pupil is a smooth, medium-bodied, pleasantly dry IPA with forward aromas and flavor evocative of tropical fruit. Notes of guava and mango are most commonly detected in this gently bittered beer.”

What our panel thought

Aroma: “Sweet and juicy with grapefruit, orange, and some lemon. A touch of herbal and floral and a bit of pine. Low malt that’s bready and toasty.”

Flavor: “A nice balance between sweet and bitter. Notes of orange, grapefruit, and some lemon hit up front with a juice-like character. There’s also an herbal and floral character. Malt sweetness of biscuit and a little caramel. Pine/resin hops, some grapefruit, toasted malt backing, and then the bitterness slides in, and grows and lingers into a medium finish.”

Overall: “Nice fruity notes. The citrus and hops character came through with good balance of bitterness and complexity.”

Societe Brewing Company The Coachman

“Aroma offers tropical fruit mixed with dank and catty, lightly bready malt. That combination persists into the flavor, but the intensity lessens. Fruity esters boost the tropical impression. Body is light, crisp, without excessive bitterness. Aftertaste shows earthy, dank notes and a lingering bitterness.”

Alvarado Street Brewery Riwaka, Baby!

“Muted aroma with slight fruity hop notes and a low counterpoint of toasty malt. Flavor has a slight cinnamon note on top of the medium citrus and a malt presence that provides balance. Nice roundness to the mouthfeel. Medium bitterness.”

AleSmith Brewing Company AleSmith IPA

__Aroma:__ “Peach, lemon, tangerine, and piney up front. A bit of herbal, grassy, floral, and pineapple in the background. Toasty/bready malt is bigger than I’d expect.” __Flavor:__ “Simple malt bill with a touch of toasted character plays second fiddle to the light colored citrus hops (orange, grapefruit, lemon). Some earthy spice notes as well hit in the middle of the taste. Balance is great for the style, though a bit under-carbonated. Bitterness is present but not overwhelming.” __Overall:__ “Peach up front with a more classic West Coast IPA aroma in the background. Good balance of malt sweetness and assertive bitterness. Well-made beer.”
