What the brewers say

"Bold chocolate and coffee flavors with deceptively smooth roastiness balanced with subtle pine and citrusy hops."

What our panel thought

“Soft espresso and hints of smoke. Notes of resin/minty hops. Luscious and rich dark malt with French roast coffee, licorice, and a burnt toast note. Finishes slightly sweet. The mouthfeel holds it together, creamy throughout. Rich and rewarding.”

What our editors thought

“Beautiful blend of chocolate and roast on the nose—intense but polished with a bready edge. The sip pushes more of the same, as that toasted bread takes the edge of the more intense roast flavors without the very-caramel sweetness that some others employ. The balance despite the intensity is impressive.”

Arizona Wilderness Brewing American Presidential Stout

“Enticing pepper aroma, chocolate notes suggest a molé complexity. The flavors are a balanced blend of cocoa on top of peppers, without much overt heat. Very approachable, with light spiciness lingering in the aftertaste.”

Highland Park Brewery Barrel-Aged Griffith J. Griffith (2021)

“Dark chocolate and roast on the nose, relatively muted, with light coffee and heavy cream. In the flavor: a boozy dark-chocolate vanilla, with fruity coffee accentuating the sweet base. Dark, creamy espresso component emerges as it warms.”

Top Rung Brewing Company Winter Lager

Malt-forward aroma: toast, cocoa, raisin, cola, Maduro cigar, light coffee, hint of browned johnnycake. Heady, malt-dominated flavor—deep toasted bread crust, cocoa, fig, raisin, spicy ethanol, toffee, dried cherry. Hop-bitterness builds. Quite creamy. Clean. Lovely. Doppelbock-adjacent.
